Si's Fishless Cycle

:hyper: today has been stressful but fun... I decided to put tropica substrate below the sand even if it wasn't essential...I felt a bit happier doing it that way, I also put more sand over that, ~2.

I did a full water change with cold, temp matched water...

I've also planted most of my plants, excluding java moss and java ferns. They gave me Christmas moss instead of java, which isn't as hardy so I don't want it...and they had no java ferns in..other than that, all is good :good:

Depending on how tank goes tonight will be the decider on whether I will stock tomorrow or not.

pretty pleased with the outcome, the wood will be moved around I think, it didn't fit quite like I wanted it so the middle bit is sitting on top of another piece...feel free to add any suggestions :)

How much did that cost you? I would also be considering feeding the plants if you don't stock the tank.

About the Woood... Golden ratio!!

Well I think the piece on the right should be a support and you should actually prop the long piece up ontop of it, so fish can swim underneath it and when you do attach Java fern to it they will be Mid to upper level on the tank.

Cba with golden ratio but maybe... I was thinking of sacking of the java fern too. not sure...

I've got TPN+, tropica root tabs and easy carbo...

How much did what cost me?

The elephant you hired out... the plants of course.

Why sack off the Java fern? It will grow grate on that bog wood.

grate? I don't want to grate java ferns.

You might have meant the whole tank :sly:

not sure what the plants were, atleast 5 pound each and there are 7 in there at the moment... a few were closer to 10 quid though. substrate underneath was 14, the fertilisers and things are quite competitive so even though i've spent quite a bit i'm happy because its an investment in my eyes

Waaaaaaa 2 questions

1 what is golden ratio

2 How exactly do you attach Java Fern to bogwood?

1. Golden ratio is "a ratio within the elements of a form, such as height to width, approximating 0.618"

"the golden ratio is found throughout nature, art and architecture. Pinecones, seashells, snail shells and the human body all exhibit the holden ratio. Leonardo da vinci commonly incorporated into their paintings".

theres a guide to this stuff on the planted tank forum and various other sites... :good: tells you how to use it for fish tanks.

2. Certain superglues or fishing line. Its another plant which can be attached to wood/stone... and usually do better that way

Looking good Si! Don't dismiss the java fern, it will add a certain thing to the tank that isn't there right now.

You don't get well placed wood, rocks and plants in nature so forget the golden ratio IMHO unless you want to get all arty on us :)

You'd be better to try and get an organised chaos in there I think...i.e. something which you could well believe would be in nature. Are you going to put any rocks/slate in there? You want some caves etc, the one piece of wood laying onto the other will work but you need more hiding spots than that I think.

Cheers :)

I agree... There is space for smaller fish and shrimp under the bogwood but not the rams really. Maybe some coconut caves, I had some slate but I'm not a big fan of how to put it at the moment. I fancy making something to fit the shape of the bogwood gaps, maybe stick some slate together

Will have a think.... I'm sure things will change
