siphoning

I had the same problem. When I finally got it working, I thought I was gonna suck up more than 20% of the water before I got anything clean.

Thank goodness I don't have to do it again for another week or so.

Good Luck!

Glad it's finally working slurpie! To really get the grunge, cleaning you're gravel is a must. If you find your sucking gravel up, just kink the hose for a bit to let it fall back down. Or, stir the gravel good(without sucking) to uproot any debris then suck up dirt why it's free in the water. Now remember to unplug the filter(or you'll burn out the motor) and the heater.

I've found that the best method is too push the nozzle down into the gravel until it is almost touching the bottom of the tank. You should see a cloud of crap shoot up the tube (if you have enough suction :) ).
For a really good clean, run your fingers LIGHTLY through the gravel before you start syphoning. Thius will stir up the crap and make itt easier to suck up.

golly my fish poop a LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTT i did the gravel pushing thing cuz my guppies are constantly in the way -_- and i kant find my ghost shrimp nobody ate them... those mollies scare me they're way too big

im sweating so much, everytime i pour like 1 cup of new water all their poop starts swimming around in my face again! :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr:

lookiin for my poor ghost shrimp takes me 10 mins to find them even in very clear water  and my guppies keep nipping at the tube and trying to swim up the water in it -_- scares me outta my wits :grr:

The simple thing to remember about syphons is, all they are doing iis using gravity to draw the water from a high place (your tank) to a lower place (your bucket) If it's going to fast, simply raise your bucket higher. The closer it is to your tank, height wise, the slower the flow will be.

When getting ready to syphon, fill the hose with water all the way. Make sure there is little or no air. Then put the syphon end in the tank and put the other end outside and you're ready to go. Move fast. :)

What I find works easiest is to fill the siphon end with water by submersing it in the tank, put your finger over the hose end, remove the siphon (now full of water) and hold it up so that the siphon and hose form a U. Then slightly remove your finger from the hose so that the hose fills with water. Stick the siphon in the tank (not letting any air get in), the hose in the bucket, and you're set.

It sounds more complicated than it is, and it's much better than the sucking method.
