Siphon

I have been tempted to buy one, but at the prices I've seen, $50 for 50 feet of tubing and the attachments, it doesn't seem worth it to me.

Well I just bought the 50' python a week ago for my 55 gallon. It's the greatest innovation, along with floating algae magnets. Storage might be a problem, but I just bought a long wide and really low plastic container for it which I store under my bed. It's really handy if you have a glass top or a heavier tank lid to hold the gravel cleaner end in the tank so that you don't even have to tank it out of the water. There are also a few tricks to catch when used first couple of times, but after that, water changes can be done in under 5-10 minutes depending on how much you take out. Bought it for $80 canadian and it was a great investment!

Also, don't even think about trying to build your own, it'll cost a lot more(checked it out) and the tubing you buy will probably kink, unlike the pythons.

If your siphon (the ridgid part) is shorter than your tank heigh you can just bob it up and down a few times. This forces the water up the tube and once it crests the peak of the tubing the siphon will start itself.
