You do realize that it isn't necessarily the "view similar threads" that lead to old threads being resurrected, don't you? Before that feature was added, old threads would be resurrected. Sometimes members use search to find them. Sometimes people just click back to old threads. And a really big one is that spambots pick old threads to post to -- the mods can delete the post, but it still becomes refreshed to the top of the page.

Take a little personal responsibility and look at the date of the thread before you post to it. It isn't all the "view similar threads" box's fault. Someone, like the admin, either likes it or at the very least doesn't see a need for a change. Just take a few seconds to check before you post and won't have to "waste all that time" then.

im done with this,, the mods have been avoidin the problem since god knows when and theres been multiple posts on it b4 no point in tryin again, tehy arent cluing in obviously.

I've never had any problems with it, I sometimes come across some resurrected threads like the one you are taking about. I just point out that they are old if no one has noticed it yet. Then they die again and no harm is done, I don't understand the big fuss about it. I always tend to check the post dates before I post, and even if you do resurrect a thread its not a big deal. The similar topic thing has help me quiet a bit.

I like this board and the mods here at least they make sense. Not like another board I use, where "lol" is filtered to "I totally disagree" along with 500 other words, just cuz they like to mess with us  . And when we complain too much they switch the boards over to read-only.

o i think the mods are great on here, just they havent done nothing in the past i guess it isnt worth arguing now was my point.

nice tank vid in ur sig btw.

It's not something that has been avoided. It has been discussed numerous times in the mods forum. It will probably be addressed in the next software upgrade but you can't just upgrade the software everytime a small issue comes up. William is aware of the concerns about it and is looking into what can be done to get a pop-up box warning that it is an old thread.

People complain that they have replied to a thread that was old because someone else pulled it up and restarted it. Before you post on any thread, you should read all of it, especially the original post, which has the original post date. If it's old, simply post that it's an old thread so everyone else will know and then let it die.

As far as seeing them, you can turn it off so that they don't show by simply clicking the little "-" on the right side of the "Similar Topics" banner.

But all we ever seem to be told is that is is being discussed, never that anything is likely to be done about it.

You first started a thread on this on 2 November 2007. That is now over 5 months ago. Is it too much to ask for some sort of actual response on what the plan is after 5 months?

that was my point andywg, thx.. i mean all respect meant to the mods, but it pissed me off when i heard its been soooo long and not a thing has been done, or an answer come up with. Dont wait for the software upgrade, find an answer, then we will wait till the next upgrade for the answer to be followed through with. What good does waiting till the upgrade, forgetting about it, or not being able to get a good answer b4 the upgrade happens, and then this happens again? Pushing things off like that seems very un-mod like for the mods on this site.

The mods here have no control over the adoption of new versions of the board software, nor what any new versions may or may not contain. All mods can do is voice concerns in the appropriate places, and then it is their opinion. Instead of just moaning, elucidate, how would you prefer mods behave in this case?

It is a modification which is installed to the forums. We do agree entirelythat it would be much better if it had an automatic date cutoff, and it is something that I have enquired about, thus far I have run into a brick wall, with no response from the creator of the modification or any other users as to how one might go about creating a cutoff date for it. I am continuing to try and get into contact with them to try and resolve this, but until I am able to there is not much I can report back or do about it I am afraid. If anyone here has an advanced knowledge of PHP or knows a way of doing this then I would like to hear from them.

Why not consider an auto lock for old posts, or a large notice that appears when replying to old posts about how long it has been dead? These appear on loads of other fora so are certainly out there. It wouldn't stop the search returning really old posts, but it would prevent them being replied to leading to them coming back to the top.

i agree, there's two of these pop up things that are in use on another forum i use (William, happy to put you in touch with the guy who runs it if you like) that I think would be useful here

first is something like 'This thread is over 3 months old, please consider this when replying' the second one say's 'while you were reviewing this topic x other replies have been posted, you may wish to review these before you post' so particularly if the topics moving fast, you get a chance to see the new replies before yours goes up, making sure that your answer is appropriate to akll the information available at the time.
