Hi, noticed this today, i was in many different posts, and the thing at the bottom that shows u similar posts, multiple times they were so old it was useless, once it was 2004! 4 years old! i dont see the point myself, maybe recent posts in last month? idk its an idea, i can even see somebody saying "well they might provide useful info for the person", yea but its better for them to hear and discuss it now and avoid taking an idea meant for cercumstances different from their own accidentally. thats y they posted. i cant see it being needed down there, and it kinda makes the site (to somebody new or like myself who is on for the first time in 6 months) seem likke it is used very little when it infact is used a lot daily.

idk its my oppinion neways, one month is the max i think, just an idea.

lol ty:) just in my eyes it seems useless to have posts from years ago (like 2003!!).. If people cant find a sticky, or a post in the last month or two, that gives them any ideas.. they should prolly ask anyways. That will always guarantee them the best results, allow them to ask questions, and of course, it wont make the site look like a dusty book people pull out once every 5 years:p

well i guess id have 2 things to say b4 i go read that one, a. y is it still an issue? (thinkin ill find the answer on this other thread in 30 seconds), b. if the thing below showed me stuff from 2 months ago and not stuff from 2005 idve known that i guess.. kinda proovin my point.

well after reading that, my oppinion is that, AND PLEASE MODS READ THIS:), that maybe if we kept it within 3 or 6 months or something, some more uptodate posts would get to be displayed if they are available, and we should make newest ones at top, currently the older ones (5 years old for example) are on top. Also remember things change and that is y in my oppinion it would be useful to keep them recent, so that if something has changed, either it will be in the recent ones, or they will be forced to ask and avoid a possible mix up.

idk its a thought..

The biggest problem with keeping them recent is that the similar topics are picked based on the title of the thread and not the content. For instance the ones for this thread pick up on the keywords "at bottom of" in your topic title so 4 of them are actually about threads concerning "at bottom of tank" and not bottom of page. I did a search and it appears those are the most recent ones that contain "at bottom of".

I guess what really needs to be changed is the method that it compares them. If you look at the pinned Fishless Cycling thread for instance, the similar topics listed are all from the last 3 weeks. The pop-up would be nice to warn that a topic is old. There is some useful info in most of those threads if they are truly similar and not like the ones for this thread.

im not exactly sure of the solution myself, just tryin to put some input into the site to avoid it,, u kno.. any other imput or ideas here? i guess more or less the point overall is that now apparently this is the second post regarding this problem, then maybe something should be done to make it fitting for all members and guests.. not delete them cuz some use them, but not do nothing..

Thx

Actually, there have been way more than 2. I did one when I came back after an extended absence probably a year ago. I think the issue is making a change with the current software configuration. William has been looking into it.

Why not just disable it until a solution is found? Ot just install a blocker on replying to posts more than x months old until a better solution can be found?

This is a constant source of discussion on the mod board. My choice would be to get rid of the wretched thing.

I think it is usefull sometimes, when i post a question i can then look at all other answers before that to get lots of info that may not be posted because the search feature brings up every little thing even if the topic is not about that.

idk ill let the mods check it out, just i guess more or less try and figure something out since theres been so much for and against it it prolly isnt somthing to just leave alone and forget about. I might agree with the post stating we might need to change the method it uses to find them.

Thanks guys

Murph

P.S ive been keeping a personal count of the oldest thing ive seen on there, im at 6 years so far:p

I wouldn't hold your breath. This was brought up ages ago with a number of different solutions to various problems associated with it which work well in other fora.

Progress to date: nothing. :)

while I feel that the similar topics panel has some bugs to be worked out by invision boards, I think that the idea is sound in principle. there is alot of information that is still as viable now as it was in say '04.
