I added some fish to my new aquarium today and realized I didnt have an air pump to oxygenate the water. So I went out and bought a cheap superfish 100L pump and airstone, only problem is its way too loud, not only does it vibrate loads but it also buzzes too. I have the tank in my bedroom and I know for a fact this pump will keep me awake at night. So I need a pump that is as quiet as possible, any suggestions?

What brand do you have? I have the topfin 8,000, rated for 170 gallon tank and it hardly makes any noise! Plus it has a dial on it you can either increase or decrease the air flow, which is very nice. I also recommend trying a towel under it and putting it in a cabinet if possible if you don't want to buy another, that should help a lot.

You don't need an airpump to oxygenate the water, flow with a rippling surface will do just fine.

If you do stay with airpumps then silent is a major challenge. I suspend mine from a piece of elastic so that it can't transmit it's vibrations. A piece of filter sponge underneath them helps instead though.

My favourite airpump for noise was an old piston one, but I've not seen one on sale for a long time and the noise is different, rather than being a lot quieter.

Its just a Superfish 100L pump, I have a thick towel underneath it but it doesnt seem to do much!

Really? So even when my tank is fully stocked as long as I have my regular filter on I wont need an air stone + pump?

you can just have it on in the day, thats what i do, as long as your filter is making the water move its fine to turn it off at night.

Well my filter is making the water surface move but the output nozzle is under the surface not breaking it (as this makes noise) will this still be ok? If not I guess I could just have the air pump on during the day.

You only need a ripple on the surface, no need for the water surface to be broken.

A lot of members including myself inject Co2 into our tanks, and the O2 level is still more than adequate for fish.

Ah thats ok then :)

But why exactly do you inject your tanks with Co2? Something to do with live plants or something?
