Hi all. I've had a group of discus for 18 months, and all has been good after I removed some decidedly iffy fish last year. Those fish I bought weren't great, I knew it at the time but my eagerness to spend my money got the better of me. Well, three of those fish were returned after 3 months as they never put any weight on, or tbh ever looked very good. My friend owns the lfs and when I called in a week later he told me they passed after 3 days.
Now, all my other fished thrived since then, accept the one remaining fish from the original batch. Its head blade thin, it started losing its balance about three months or so ago so I decided it was best to put an end to,its suffering. Since around June three of the 8 fish have been regularly spawning and even tho I had the issue with poor souls that sadly died, I've never seen any evidence of disease. That is until a month ago when one particular blue turquoise started hanging in one corner of the tank, barely moving, very skittish if approached, no great interest in feeding. I observed it as much as I could, it darkened, and I noticed white faeces from it. After some reading I leant towards intestinal worms and treated with Kusuri wormer plus. Saw a little improvement but had also observed some of the others flicking off plants so did wonder about flukes. Now, 2 days after worming I came home to see a 2" clear jelly like strand floating mid water. I looked to see a few more.......never seen them before. So a week passed, I saw no real return to health so after a water change,I used Fluke solve. Another week and still the same, and to be honest the fish had all, become extremely nervous, shooting across the tank erratically for no obvious reason. Really beginning to get very concerned, did as much research as possible. Thing is, so many of the diseases I was reading about present the same symptoms. The clear jelly I saw and a few symptoms made me believe it could be spironucleus. So last week I treated the tank with Octozin. Still can't see any improvement and the group have become,so nervous its untrue. All have good appetites and are carrying good weight with the exception of the blue turq hanging in the corner. He's still dark, but has a horrible murky grey appearance to his body. I haven't a clue what I'm dealing with and so don't know how to assist them with the correct treatment. Throughout the treatments I've kept a higher temperature of 88. If anyone could offer any insight I'd be most grateful. Ph 6 - 6.5 over co2 period. Kh 3-4. Nitrate 25-30ppm. R/O used for 2x 20% water changes weekly corrected with pro discus mineral. Fed every morning with my own beef heart mix, then Prima mid afternoon, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp 8pm. Lights on 2pm -9.30pm, Co2 1pm-7:30pm.
