Sick Betta?

Positive and negative update today!

Oscar's still fighting. He's lost all his tail finnage that was not blue (about 1/4 of his tail) and it came off bizarrely- was like the rays were plucked off piece by piece. But on a positive note it looks like the rot itself has stopped and I'm seeing a little white on the end of his tail so hopefully it's going to start mending. Oscar is still constantly laying on the bottom of the bowl BUT he is vigourously coming up for air and does not just go completely limp to get to the bottom of the bowl, he actually tries to make an effort to swim down. The maracyn/melafix combo plus epsom salt baths have seemed to help. Going to start alternating salt and epsom baths, I think it will continue to do good for him. He stil has stress stripes which is understandable but his bloating is basically gone, so that's another plus. No appetite at all however, won't eat presoaked pellets, dry pellets, or pea.

He's wedged himself between the filter and the wall of the bowl and is almost upside down again, breathing heavily. I can't believe nothing has really worked so far- I see little ups but more downs! :( Rushes up for air but is letting himself just drop back to the floor again.... No appetite, and nothing seems to be helping. :-(

Have you tested the water for Ammo, Nitrite and Nitrate what are the readings?

Im sorry. It doesnt look good for poor Oscar. Hows he doing today? Im not sure if you can really do anything for him now. Keep doing water changes. His lifelessness, is more or less because he has lost the will to live, because hes near death. Sounds like my old Boss. :-(

Today was a little better- Oscar was actually "sitting" upright instead of on his side, and he seemed a little interested in what is going on around him. I'm seeing a little fin regrowth in his tail too, which was a pleasant surprise..

Tested water a few weeks ago and everything was normal but my water test kit is MIA right now and I can't remember where I put it. :(

So here's some pictures....

Only a few weeks ago...

And a few minutes ago... he started laying like this a few minutes before I started taking photos. :(

Lower the water level. It will make getting up for air easier.

How is he doing now? He is stunning btw :)

Edit: the stats you had a couple of weeks ago and the stats you have at the present will be defos not the same.

Id also advice, to soak his pellet food in garlic juice before feeding. This will entice him and will help his internals aswell.

Goodluck! :)

you're doing something right, he is still holding on - keep up the good work!

Thank you. :)

Today started off... not so great, but I just watched him take a breath of air and then do one lap around the bowl, which was the first time he's actually seemed a little like himself since he got sick! The water level was about 1/2 a gallon but I lowered it as much as I could do with the thermometer and heater could fit in so now it's like 1/4 gallon.

Still can't find the water test kit, gonna try to take some water to the LFS for a test since I'm having no luck finding my API test...

Will try the garlic juice trick, have tried it before when Oliver was sick to no avail but it might be different for Oscar. :)

More photo updates...

My little hospital bowl, sorry it's so dirty, the outside glass needs a good cleaning  Had to cram the heater down to fit it all in the water.

Ok seriously someone is out to get me.

Oliver gets slices in his fins often when he swims in and out of the plants in his tanks, I haven't been able to change this no matter what I try, so I wasn't surprised when I went to feed him that he had slices in his tail fin.

Then I looked closer.

In the center of one the slice, what do I see? FINROT

And because Oscar's in my hospital tank I had to make a quick hospital bowl out of a .5 gallon container that many months ago held artichoke hearts in oil that I cleaned and stored. Because his is fairly mild and he has a big appetite and no real change in his personality I'm treating him with just melafix as of right now. If he doesn't show a stop in the rot in a few days I'll start him on Maracyn as well...

:shout: UGHHHHH!

 not going to well :(

just keep a close eye on both of them. Keep us updated though, as we might be able to help if needed :)

Oliver's doing fine, no change in him at all, acting totally normal. Started him on Maracyn so he heals quickly.

Oscar's looking up as well. Still no appetite even when I soaked his pellets in garlic but he seems much more attentive. :)

So Oscar's looking and acting a lot better. Far from perfect, but a lot better.

Problem is, Oliver's starting to get these cottony patches on his tail fin and anal fin.

Help! Everything that can go wrong is going wrong! :shout:
