Hi there, i was just wondering if anyone knows whether a siames fighting fish will get on well with neon tetras, and a dwarf Gorami? Also, a while ago i got a siames fighting fish, but when i brought him home and put it in the tank, it seemed soo depressed? it was getting thrown about by the current of the filter, and at one point he was being sucked against the filter... :( it was really sad, i managed to help him, but after night fall, and my 7inch common pleco... he disapeared in the morning... :( any ideas what may have happend, i dont want a repeat... thanks in advance
richard

Bettas (fighting fish) generally tend not to get along with tetras or gouramis, tetras are fast moving fin nippers who will harrass your betta to no end. Gouramis and bettas are both teretorial and agressive and that combination will just result in unhappy, ripped and possibly dead fish. If you have a strong filter in your tank its not good for a betta either, it will pull at their long flowing fins, If you want a betta, I would suggest getting a 1- gallon tank with an undergravel filter for him and maybe a snail or an african dwarf frog for company

great thanks, i'll check there. So a 1 gallon tank, now would a small red crab be a bad idea for a room mate? i'm assuming so, but just want to check...

crabs don't generally make good fish tank mates
anything with claws does not make a good fish tank mate
they tend to rip up the fins, catch the fish, eat the fish
especially in a tiny 1 gallon tank, betta only!

i have found out with experience that the fighters if given the chance will attempt to eat the tetras.
my own fighter ate a tetra that i purchased for my tank and obviously i found out the hard way. so did my little guy .....

Have just come back from the lfs where I saw one tank with a betta and dwarf gouramis. The betta was flaring non-stop and had already taken an eye out of one of the gouramis. They were going at each other all the time.

Another tank (really brilliant combination this!) had serpa tetras in with a betta. Needless to say, there was little left of the bettas tail- serpas are some of the nippiest of the commonly kept tetras.

Bettas being weak swimmers need a tank without a strong current and with no boisterous tank mates. You could try large amano shrimps, they hopefully won't get eaten and have no claws to do any damage with.

Bamboo shrimp are larger than amano so may be a better option to avoid them being eaten. I have however kept amao shrimp with a betta with no problems at all.

bamboo shrimp being filter feeders wouldn't last long in a 1 gallon bowl with a betta. If you get 2 gallons + an african dwarf frog would be a good tank mate.
