Show Off Your Tank!

Love the star wars figures. xD

Thanks Zephyr, all the fish in the tank have star wars character names too lol (yes, we are insane, but we like it :D )

Inadvertently found this while looking for something else:

Death Star Aquarium Background

I just bought a 220 gallon 30" high tank and I am having trouble finding a background tall enough. I wanted something like this:

I wanted to decorate with rocks and roots to match. Unfortunately it only comes in 24".

There are all different kinds of anubias out there that grow huge, middle or small, all different type of leaves and even colours. They can't die and look great

This is an old picture of my tank when I planted it. The anubias have grown a lot since(no camera at the moment) but gives you an idea. The wood is all covered in different anubias types(I love the huge barteri. barteri one to the front of the driftwood and the right side, hiding the filter intake tubes)

I plan on adding anubias and java fern to my new tank.

Couple of questions:

Do I add plants to the tank before or after it is cycled? Can I add them while it is cycling?

Also, do I need to use any type of fertilizer in the water with these types of plants?

Thanks!

I had mine in the tank during cycling and they were perfectly fine. No fertilizer is needed for the anubias. It grows nicely without anything. As for the java fern, it never liked it in two of my tanks and grows in the third and I've no idea why.

Thanks! Do you know if Java moss with grow on an ornament? My wife likes the sunken plane ornament. I thought if I could get moss to grow on it, it wouldn't look too cheesie in a natural looking tank.

I see why not. Java moss can grow on stones so an ornament is not any different. The problem is to tight it up properly with some cotton thread until it attaches itself to it naturally. The cotton thread will disintegrate itself over time so no need to remove it. I made the mistake to tie mine with silk thread for sawing

Our new tank, that we would like to set up with a natural look, like some of the beautiful tanks in this thread. It was delivered on Wednesday.

A bunch of the equipment arrived yesterday.

My landlord just came by with some shims and helped me level the stand.

More pics to follow, as this project develops.

Whoohoo! That's going to be an awesome tank Canadian Fish! I think I have the same filter as you have there, the Rena XP3 which I think they call the XL now.....does it have 3 or 4 trays?

Oh, and it looks like you're going for black substrate too, good choice. :good:

4 trays, it's the XP4. Also, an Aquaclear 110. The tank is 72x24x30, 220 gallons.

Yeah, after looking at all the set ups in this thread we went with the black substrate. Our other 4 tanks are all bright and gawdy, very artificial, though our 3 year old loves them.

Looking forward to spending the next few months decorating it with driftwood, rocks, and plants. Though we'll be keeping balas and barbs so my choice of plants is very limited. Anubias, Java Fern, Java moss. I don't know if there are others I can try.
