Should We Be Worried?

Have you cycled the tank?

sigh, its obvious that they havnt, thats why people post here for help, the rolleyes emote realy doesnt help someone that only wants advice.

i dont realy understand why you would post in that way

Yeah, not having a go or anything like that, Carlovel, but just because we're all tired of having to type out "your tank isn't cycled" 20 times a week, doesn't mean that we should be less than friendly and helpful; it's all new and confusing to them, if not to us.
Make roly eyes at the LFSs, not the poor newbs, please ;)

Thanks guys. All done and they seem a bit perkier.:good:

Will get a test kit tomorrow and probably be back for more advice. :)

Good job we haven't got the same range of emoticons here as on the football-related forum that I also inhabit.......

Well guys got an API test kit - completely ripped off but hey.....

The scores on the doors tonight were
Ammonia 0.25ppm
Nitrite 0ppm
Nitrate 0ppm
pH 7.8

The boys (yes we managed to get all 3 males) seem happy enough tonight.
Do I need to do anything tonight?
Shall I test it again tomorrow?

Thanks

Claire

Hi Claire and Welcome to TFF,

The 0.25ppm reading from your API kit (good kit choice) puts you right at the top limit of the range we like to try and keep you within (0.0 through 0.25 ppm for both ammonia and nitrite(NO2)) during Fish-In cycling situations. You can choose tonight or tomorrow morning but it does need to be done.

The goal in Fish-In Cycling situations is to be enough of a detective to figure out a pattern of percentage-change and/or frequecy of change that keeps both your ammonia and nitrite(NO2) within the very narrow range of zero to 0.25ppm for the two poisons such that you will be able to be back home again from work or school or whatever to change water again before you've gone much over the 0.25ppm. It usually takes morning and evening testing of these two chemicals and its hard (we all experienced it) because the little jump-ups in readings usually happen rather suddenly (smaller tanks are significantly more sudden than larger tanks in this regard.)

Hello,
As always good advice from Waterdrop, your in good hands there. One thing that works for me is to keep a journal of your water checks, over a period of time you will proberly see a pattern to your test results which makes life a lot easier knowing when & how much water to change.

Keep us all posted, Skins :good:

Your best bet now is to start a new thread titled somthing like Granny's Fish in Cycle log. Then post each test result as you do them, that way our experts will be able to tell you exactly what to do & when to do it becuase they will have a real time record of whats happening in your tank.

good luck
