should this work in a ten gallon?

i'm not positive that this would matter really, but where are you headed for college? i've done the "cart the aquarium with you" thing myself and this is kinda what i've figured out:

--use lot of plants but a minimal amount of substrate. a half inch of a very fine gauge does just fine for cheapie apongetons and lillies grown from bulbs. hornwort is also a great thing to float in the top; you should consider adding some. java fern attached to driftwood will also do nicely. (you want to use as little substrate as you possibly can; its the biggest weight contributor once the tank is drained.)

--most schools have a few independent LFS nearby; see if you can't find one of those. since its hard to get really attached to a shoal of neons (pretty but not a lot of individual personality), you'll want to ask if you can't purchase ~8 and then return them for half credit later. most independent LFS accept trade-ins and such, but you'll want to ask first.

--make certain in advance that you have a place to set your tank back up when you go home for the summer. i learned that the hard way :X (lousy parents... :p )

--its not really worth it to carry your fish with you unless you just really love them. :/

Black kuhlis are supposed to have there orange stripes be black either at maturity or all through there life, Personally I would get a third kuhli, they may look fine right now but they will be happier and you will see more of them when you add a third.

oooo Those rasboras are pretty :)

oh and pica, Im at North Dakota State University.

Reason i want to take em, is i spend a lot of my study time in my room, and its nice to be able to watch something like that. It really helps me relax and focus.

(Im an ADD Poster child so any relaxing/focusing helps )

you should definatly get atleast another kuhlie loach. they do seem less shy with more of their friends around :D

i can't think of what you can put in with a dwarf gourami, i don't know a whole lot about them but couldn't you maybe keep two of them in a ten gallon?
then you could do:
2 gouramis
3-4 kuhlies
some ghost shrimp (which will die before you have to take them home again, it makes it easy)

i've kept neons in smaller tanks and IMO i think they are happier in larger tanks. they are far more active and i have also noticed that in smaller tanks, they do not really school together anyway (though this does not mean you should only get a couple)
good luck figuring it all out, it's always hard to limit yourself to just a couple fish.
