Should I Use A Greenhouse Or A Shed Outside To Keep A Big Fish Tank In

I've recently just been talking to a female friend and she was telling me her new husband in his 40's has worked in a glass company for years and can get any size, width and thickness for free and I've been wanting to have a very large fish tank for sometime (10ft) and was  wondering what will be the best thing to keep a size tank like this in?

I think it depends on where you live really. Here in Arizona neither would work unless they had air conditioning units! It also depends on the type of fish. The short answer is whichever will best control the temperature of your climate for the needs of the fish you decide to keep. Vague I know...but it's really the best answer I can give...it depends.

A greenhouse sounds like a great recipe to cook your fish in a soup of algae to me

Probably a dumb question but can you not keep it inside your house? :p
Also when/if you do get this going..please take lots of pictures!

Hmm, definitely would not use a greenhouse, think will mess your water temps too much and as daize said, algae would really be a problem in the summertime.

Shed is a reasonable idea if you really do not have any space inside your house, have seen these being built on journals here on this forum but these 'sheds' are substantial though with insulation and heating inside to keep temperature stable throughout the year and has high tech equipment with plumbing and electrical cables installed.

Not a cheap job IMO.

But if you do go ahead with this and design as much as you can with a reasonable budget, then there is nothing stopping you with a project like this.

Personally, I'd love to do a project like that one day.
yes.gif

But you would hardly be able to enjoy the tank in a shed?! :(

Greenhouse a big no also.

Clear a large area in your house and get one built to measure the area :)

I cannot have a big tank in my flat, I live upstairs. I want a tank inside and was thinking of having a big tank or pond in my back yard but it is a yard not grass, what are my options?

Move to a bigger house would be best option? But not realistic I know.

Have a couple of specialist tanks in your flat. Maybe a 200 litre tanks max or something like that with single species you can specialise in.
A small marine tank would be interesting as well, but more tricky with water parameters and a bit more expensive.

You CAN have a shed in the back yard with a fairly large tank, but not gonna be easy and would imagine more trouble than its worth in your block of flats area.

I live in a block of flat too, but we are on the ground floor and have concrete floors so thats not a worry for me about weight of tanks on flooring and access for larger tanks etc.

So your friend with the glass specialist mate, reckon he can make a special sort of tank that could fit inside your flat? You know, like an unusual design or set up that would make it extremely interesting.

Thats it, am outta ideas (for now anyway)! lol

the link to that thread isn’t working
This is the link for those who may be interested

When the site had a software upgrade a few years ago, the url format was changed which is why older links don't work. All that's needed is to use the info in the old url and change it to the current format.

Found it. I have to admit, you found it first, long before I did. Reputation intact.

Just for clarification, you are going to use the glass just for an enclosure not the aquarium, right?
