they are just ceramic beads to hold filter bacteria

I prefer sponges because they filter gunk and hold bacteria

So, they are just an expensive sponge?

I used a small bag on top of the sponges and filter floss to hold down the media better in my Aquaclear 50

not even a sponge, but littles bits of clay with lots of tiny holes in for bacteria.
