Should I Put Him Out Of His Misery?

Well, humane or not, avoid having to do that. I can see why in that case, (I do that too.) but keep a close eye on the rest of your fish. Good luck. :good:

thjanks fry, will do all other fish seem perfectly fine, although im desperate for a breeder tank, as my angelfish spawned again, but they once again obviously had no chance in a community tank :( guess ill look arund for a decent small tank

go with your gut,but i say dont, you never know it could get better in nature it will end ether fast or get better, but in captivity more likely to get better~good luck

I just catch an ill fish in the net and smack it off a wall - instant death. :teacher:

thats horrific i really hope u r joking
if u arent u should not have ANY pets and someone should through u into a wall when u have the cold c how u like it.

I think that for a fish as small as a cardinal freezing is humane.

Sounds like it MAY be a swim bladder issue.

If it were my fish I think I would euthanise it. Just make sure the water is cold enough. IE. has a layer of ice on top.

hmm im not sure now, he has started to swim around in the small tank, but very fast but still rolling upside down and what not...

Hi guys, unfortuanately i had to do it  and i hated it.

the water was ICE cold, and i put him in the cup and he sank to the bottom and after around 3 seconds, hills gills and mouth were not moving, he diddnt even struggle that is how weak he was, he was just lay on the bottom with his mouth and gills moving in the tank, even when i caught him with the net he diddnt bother to move  he had also gotten bloated aswell.

i think i did the right think by putting the little dude out of his misery but it was not at all enjoyable.

thanks guys

freezing is a crappy way to euthanise fish, Iam afraid.

The most painless method is to simply sever the spinal cord with a pair of very sharp scissors.

clove oil is pretty rubbish too, the US humane chappies don't reccomend it.

As I said a pair of sharp scissors, one snip and it is game over

No i'm NOT joking - that's how I've done it for years .... instant death ..... and is it really any different to crushing it with a brick??
Oh and it was the prescribed "humane" method for killing fish in the first ever Aquarium guide I bought so I didn't just dream up the method.

The only problem with the smacking against the wall idea is that lack of a guaranteed kill. I've once done it myself (having been advised by a far more experienced fish keeper) and it wasn't exactly definite. If you're nervous it would be very easy to slap the fish and not actually cause death.

Of course, if you can stand the clean-up act you could make use of any of these.

Was that some kind of joke?

Sending the reader to a colection of sharp things.
Yes they would be effective, but I doubt that is what potential euthenasiaists need their browsers directing to.

I suggested the least unpleasant method (for the fish, and lets face it our opinion isn't important is it?)

A sharp pair of scissors, the dress-makers sort preferably.
Just behind the eye, a quick snip through a third of the poor fishes body.

Spinal cord severed, end of problems.

I know that people react oddly when this question is raised, but what is more imporatant ones aesthetic sensibilities or prevention of suffering?

I know it isnt nice, but when you signed up to be the ultimate arbiter of life and death for your creature you entered into a kind of contract of responsibilty, Iam afraid.

Iced water is a dreadfull method to choose, lets face it how did you feel when you leapt into the sea, or an unheated pool?

Clove oil may seem a nice method at first glance, but noone has researched the effect of it upon a fish,
as I said earlier the US humane chaps (society or association, I always disremmeber) don't recommend clove oil.

It is only a quick thing, so why would you risk it being unpleasant for the poor unfortunate animal whose welfare you have agreed to take care of?

As far as Iam concerned anyone who gives a dam about their animals would chose the spinal cord severing method.
And if that is too much for you pay a vet to do it, or don't keep fish.

rant over

everyone has an opinion and not everyone will agree.

time to close this thread before it gets out of hand.

you can only go with what you feel comfortable with and if you cant do it then a vet will..and usually if its a small fish, will be free..usually.
