I Made The HUGE Mistake Of Trusting The Lady At Petco And Bought My Fish The Same Day I Finished Setup.
I Had 3 Different Cichlids (2 Yellow Labs And 1 Jewel) The Maybe BIGGEST Lie She Told Me Was That They Were Compatible With My Swordtail. Also I Bought A Molly Angelfish And Featherfin Catfish. So For 4 Days It Seemed Perfect But Then I Went And Bought The Molly And Angelfish And Added Them. I Made The Mistake Of Reading The Description For The Angelfish And Reading "An Elegant Cichlid" And Thinking "Angelfish+Cichlid=Good"
Right Of The Bat I Started Noticing Awkrardness From The Molly. I Just Thought It Was New Aquarium Syndrome....WRONG It Was Dead 2 Days Later.
Then About A Week Later One Of The Labs Died And Had A Torn Gil (Or Expanded)Which Made Me Think It Was Murdered. So I Came Here And Made My First Post. I Was Told As Far As The Lab Goes It COULD Have Been The Jewel But Most Likely They Both Were Poisoned By The Ammonia In The Tank.
So I Put The Swordtail And Angelfish In A Fish Bowl I Have (Its Either That Or Lee's "Critter Cage") And Now I Have A Yellow Lab, Jewel, And Featherfin Catfish All In A Poisoned Tank. I Want To Take Them All Back To The Store But I Can't Drive Yet And My Dad Won't Take Me To The Store :sly: Anyways Theyve Been Lingering At The Top Of The Tank Lately So Im Not Sure

how big is the tank? are there any signs of aggression from the fish in there right now?

do you have a test kit? since you are in a fish in cycle i would be doing 30% water changes every other day, if you dont have a test kit its hard to say how much you should be doing, but that will be helping with the levels

howcome you moved the other fish? aggression? the fish in teh bowl does it have a filter? if not its huge water changes at least 3 times a week

I wouldnt euthanize them if they are getting along fine in the tank right now [i dont have much experience with labs and jewels] id try and keep them going until you can get to the store rather than let them suffer

when can you next get to teh store then?

if there isnt a way you could advertise in the classified section in here?

Should never put fish in the same day as your setup, Gotta let the filter mature and build up good bacteria, Petco i think i've heard of that if it's anything like Pets@Home then you'll always get trouble from places like that, Best places are your local fish shops.

Not trying to be an #14### or anything but capital letter at the beginning of every word is pretty annoying to read :p

Also i dont think you should really kill anything.

20g And Aggression From The Jewel. And No Filter In The Bowl And Yes I Will Be Doing MANY Water Changes.
I Know The Tank Is Too Small For A Cichlid But The Lady Was A Liar So I Didnt Know Til I Came Here

You don't need to kill them. What you need to do is get them all into non-toxic environments.

If they are all still small, it is far more likely that the tank is killing them rather than they are killing each other. If you can keep the angel and the swordtail seperated and SAFE, do that, but they need a much bigger environment than a bowl. In a bowl, they'll probably need twice daily water changes because of the ammonia building up and it is only suitable to keep them in there for a few days MAX before they start showing very real signs of stress, which can make them sick.

In your main tank, you need to test for ammonia and nitrites. If you can't do that, you'll need to be doing BIG daily water changes until you can buy a test kit. Try 75% a day (so three quarters of the water). Make sure you add water conditioner when you add the new water and match the temperature as best you can.

In your position, you really do need to get back to the store. Try and explain to your dad that these animals will likely die if you can't return some of them and get a test kit.

What size tank do you have? Do you have a large, clean tub you could use for the angel and the swordtail?

You do not need to kill them but your work will be cut out to save them at this stage.

Read this, especially the sections on setting up a new tank and cycling tanks. You are in a "fish-in cycle" at the moment so read that VERY carefully.

Beginners' Resource Centre

You'll be best off returning them all and doing a fishless cycle. This will give you time to prepare your tank properly and to choose suitable tankmates. If you keep some of the fish and do a fish-in cycle, get LOADS of plants. They're really help with the ammonia (and I mean loads, not 4 or 5 pots)

Finally, a 20 gallon tank is not suitable for any fish except the swordtail. The others will outgrow it very quickly. Please consider returning them all (or all except the swordtail) and doing a fishless cycle or fish-in with just the swordtail.

classifieds, Urgent free to good home.

if that fails... who knows but i wouldnt be killing them personally

well for someone for fills up his few hours old tank with a full load of fish you're pretty good at determining the cause of death, although i don't quite get how that ammonia could have torn the fish' gill. but i guess that's why we have CSI.

all in all, i don't understand your question. you want to know if you should kill fishes you realized to be mutually incompatible and in an environment unsuitable to handle either of them? you screwed up big time and now the fish is gonna get it. what do you expect people to tell you?

@MewMew
please read the signature rules and abide by them. what you got going there is pretentious and completely uncalled for, that's what the signature rules have been set up for.

Dude No Need To Be Rude. This Is My First Tank. And It Wasnt A Few Hours In It Was A Day Later (Yes I Know Thats Not Much Better). I Did All My Research On Livebearers And Once I Got To The Pet Store My Dad Said I Should Get The Cichlids Cuz They Looked Cool So The Lady Said They Were Good With My Tank An Compatible So I Got Them. Its Kinda Her Fault Mainly For Lying To Me. Sorry We All Cant Be Perfect Like You

sorry i refuse to read anything else from you for as long as you keep up that caps nonsense.
