Anybody in the US here of any shortage of BN plecos because my aunt can't find any and I can't find any and I called around and one said they haven't had any in a long time and they would get some if they had some on a availability list but they aren't available. Evan Aquarium Adventure doesn't have any. So anybody here of a shortage of these?

Austin

no idea if there is a shortage but i went to my local aquarium shop and they didnt receive any in their latest delivery this week even though they ordered some.

No shortage here, I know of a local breeder that has a few hundred, another usually has 50 or so on hand.

I called another place and they are selling them for 40$ labeled as BN plecos, are these really BN plecos because I bought mine for only 8$.

O how much does the breeder usually sell his for including shipping, my aunt might want to buy one if that's possible.

Strange that there should be a shortage, considering how easy they are to breed; it's a bit like hearing of a shortage of platies  I'm only hoping the lfs won't already be overrun, when it's time to shift mine.

I know it's strange, any idea to what is up with the 40$ price on a BN at aquarium adventure.

Maybe a shortage on some breeds or species but the common, unadulterated BN should be easily found.

As much as i like the BN Plecs, they seem to be more a fashionable fish atm, and i think there are far more interesting and usefull plecs out there :)

the auction i have been to today have albino bn's in abundance !! i got a pair of juvis for £1 !! infact, i got mine near the end of the auction and he actually said that he had 19 pairs left, could he see 19 hands at £1 each LOL

true breeding pairs were going at £10 for the pair.

I don't know why there aren't an abundance by me maybe the breeders where the petstores buy them from aren't breeding any.

Any idea what type of Bristlenose pleco would be selling for 40$ because that's the only one we could find is one for 40$ which is rather expensive for supposedly a pleco labeled as a BN.

There are a few like Starrylights or wild-caught ones but I've never seen actual prices on them. Most of the others are so commonly and easily bred I don't know unless it was inflated by the LFS.

Its also a UK issue I think. all off my local shops cant get any, Infact one of my local shops gave me the number of heir supplier and asked If I could supply him as he cant get them anywhere :) I obviously declined his kind offer..lol
I think the fish that are out there now are all comming from small hobbiest like myself. Breeding on a small scale. I have a large fish shop just outside york and when I got talking to the guy about my breeding BNs he about jumped on me and asked if I could pass some his way as he cant get any from the importers.
I think thats the key.. for some reason they are no longer importing/exporting these and the fish that are out there are mainy home bred sold at auctions or passed onto shops.

ATM - I live in Indiana and can NEVER find BN in any LFS around me. It seems odd to me, but maybe they just aren't "popular" here. As for $40 that is ABSURD!! I did end up getting 2 shipped from a breeder and that total with shipping was only $30.
If you are interested in getting some, they are ALWAYS on aquabid.com and are usually reasonably priced. :good:
