went to PETSATHOME today hoping to buy a male platy, for my other 3 females, but when i had a look in the big platy tank, they had around 30 platys in there and around 20 or more were dead and had fungus growing on them,
then the shop assistant saw me looking in the tank and asked me if i needed help with the fish, and i said no the fish are the ones that need the help, " i dont usually make a fuss, but someone had to"
she had alook in the tank and seen all the dead fish, some of the fish looked like they had been dead for about 2weeks, the assistant told another asistant to come and have alook at the tank, and he said that the fish in the tank had been ill for over a week now, they were gasping for air on the surface :( , but they were still on sale
so i stormed out of the shop WITHOUT a fish, and went to my local fish shop not too far from me where the tanks are always clean and fish are happy, so i ended up buying a lovely male platy from there :D
the only reason i will be going to PETSATHOME again, is to buy medication, "WHICH THEY SHOULD USE MORE OFTEN"

not a happy bunny

Its always the same at these shops. Great prices for everything else you need though! But i do remember a trip into my local P@H and they had two male bettas in the same tank, one looking VERY unhealthy.

Yeah, that's a shame. At my local fish store, I have seen sick fish before, but they always medicate that tank, shut the light off, and don't sell any of those fish until it clears up.

Luckily, my local Petco (probably a similar chain to Petsathome) is pretty good, although one time I noticed an overstocked tank of zebra danios most of whom had no tails left for some reason.

That's disgusting, they want reporting, that cruelty in my books.

Write a letter, I did :)

Tell them you'll pass them onto some company for fish protection or something :)

This reminds me. I remember when i was at pets at home a week or so back. I was looking at a tank with goldfishes in it when i saw a gold fish with two huge puffed up/ballooned out cheeks! It looked like when someone holds their breath and their cheeks pop out (except abnormally bigger). It kept swimming down and then helplessly floating to the top. At first i found it kinda funny until i realised it was some kind of infection. I then went on to see a few more goldfishes with the same problem but not as bad. The worst thing was they had all the meds sitting opposite to the tank! I asked one of the guys to sort it out, dunno if he did.

Since then i've found a local shop and the guy knows exactly what hes talking about unlike a bunch of students on their part time job!

black jack, are u implieing that the golfish had puffed out cheeks was ill because of his cheeks, the goldfish probably had swim bladder but the cheeks are perfectly normal, its a type of goldfish, i cant think of the name but it just probably had swim bladder problems:/

Yeh, they were huge. Looked like they were going to burst. The ones that were ok were swimming around together normally. But this one was on its own its head seemed to be floating to the top so it was kinda "vertical" and then it'll waddle down again...same thing over and over...and there were a few more with the same problem.

black jack thats an actual breed of goldfish

called a bubble eye

there are variations on this too

oh, in that case i'm glad. Your right about variations...cheeks were white. Do they have trouble swimming due to this aswell? Also, can some just have it on one side? If so then that probably them. Thanks for the pic btw

are they a natural strain? i mean like is there somewhere where these things float about happy in a pond... or are they a bread mutation?

i think that it is a bred strain, but i am not 100% sure. the oneside could have been popped during a struggle or damage (just guessing). i am not a big fan of goldfish since they are so readily sold and so little people know much about them. i will be getting some feeder comets to put into my outdoor pond when it is built though.
