its practiclly impossibel ..... -_- bit like angelfish and but when the fmeal is mature she gets pink tummys. but with more colourful starins these days suposingly it hard to tell......

I don't think it's that hard  I have a pair and have no trouble telling male from female....the males have extended dorsal rays (2nd and 3rd I think?) while the female does not. Also, the males have much more color in the pectoral and anal fins, and the dorsal fin extends to a point over the tail.

This is my male. Not the best pic, but...

This is my female....note the lack of extended dorsal spines and fin colors

(I agree with "Mamaschild" responce).

Fin extensions on older males help to identify them. The spines of the dorsal fin on the males are longer than those of the females.

Males also can be larger than females.

Females can have fuller redish tummies.

Male
The male will have long black colored 'spikes' extending vertically out from the tip of the dorsal closest to the head.
The dorsal is most often pointed at the tip facing the caudal fin.
The male is larger; the pelvic fins are larger.

Female
Smaller than male
The female will have a pinkish colored pelvic region.
The dorsal is rounded at the end.

I also think it is pretty easy to tell.

for the fish at the LFS near me, the ones with sharper anal fin are males, rounder, females. i have not seen this confirmed in any website but as far for those in the LFS, its true
