Severum's what to put with them

how do you sex severums full stop,i have two and they get on well but a little frisky at times.

I love mine! I have 2 gold and 2 green in a 125 with a salvini and 2 kissers. Everyone gets along ok, but I wouldn't suggest a salvini under normal conditions. Ours gets testy, but no one fish gets picked on. They do get big, and let me tell you, ours started in a 55 and when they moved to the 125, they did phenonmenal. Feed a variety of foods. Ghost shrimp is fish crack. Its fun to watch them chase the shrimp around. If you feed a high quality food with a color enhancer, you'll be amazed @ the difference. They gain beauty with age and size. I've never tried angelfish. That's a good idea.......

Hi All. This is my first post. I've got a 240L (60g) tank with 2 Severums (green male, yellow female), 2 Blue acaras (which started breeding the other day), 2 Keyholes, and 3 clown loaches. They all get along fine. Every now and then the Green sev (4 inches) and the acaras (3 inches) have a bit of a face off but nothing serious has ever come of it. Mind you, these fish are all pretty small at the moment but I've been told I shouldnt have any problems with this combination in the future.

I was in 2 different lfs last week , in the first store I saw a tank with about 12 2" gold severums , I was so tempted to buy 1 , at $7.99 , I thought was a good price [ nowhere to put him ]. In the second store I saw these people looking for fish , They picked out a 7" gold severum , the guy[ shop owner] said it was "rare" $99.I could see $40. I wanted to tell these people 1st the fish isn't rare , 2nd they could buy juvs and whatch them grow to the $99. size in a few months . I didn't know what fish if any they already had . Both are good shops , and I usually find good deals in both . I should add that I have going to both guys for close to 20 years, and have never been taken advantage of , but $99. I wanted to say something ,but that could ruin my relationship with that shop as I would have had to say it right in front of the guy[ shop owner] and they don't like that kind of thing , I wanted to say something to them , but they didn't seem to concerned with that price . so I m.y.o.b "buyer be aware"

your cichlids with exception of the keyholes will all grow over 6" , the cichlids you have are good choices  , for the most part laid back, calm compared to most other cichlids [ I.M.E ]. I've never kept clown loaches , so I can't comment on thier behavior , they do get pretty big though. Someone else may know better , but I think your 60 is going to be a little cramped once these guys are all full grown [ I like to give my fish as much room as I can ] :dunno: . I think it is a nice combo of fish , and you shouldn't have big problems with aggression .

i love my two severums they are about 3" but have taken over the tank

even sorting out a fully grown angle whos been in the tank for about 4 years, they look tiny next to it :fun: and 4 fully grown blue gourami's they are both right charaters

I have 2 severums. One I was keeping with my angelfish and had to move because he was getting a little too aggressive for them. So I put the two sevs together. That lasted a couple of months then the aggression between the two escalated and lips were getting torn up, so I had to seperate them.

It all boils down to this, every cichlid has their own personality. Some are going to be more aggressive than others regardless of whether they are classified as mildly aggressive or hyper-aggresive. Those labels can be used as general broad guidelines, but they do not indicate a hard and fast rule about ANY of the different types of cichlids. It all depends on the individual fish and that is why so many people love cichlids, they have so much personality and are so smart, they rule over nearly any other kind of fish out there.

My best advice, either have lots of tanks so that you can move fish around as personalities clash (I have 13 tanks to date myself) or be prepared to return fish occasionally when they simply won't get along and you don't have anywhere else to put them. I've had to take a couple back despite the number of tanks I have and yes, it bites, but that is a reality. I just hope I don't have to do it very often!

Best of luck with your set-ups! In theory, they should work, but really, only time and temperments will tell!

Can Severums live in the same tank as Discus? Just curious
For the most part, I think Discus should only be kept in speicies tanks since they are so fragile. They need extremely perfect conditions and severums might cause an increase in the waste and bio-load, which may affect water parameters...just a thought.

Doggfather Thanks for the link, although I don't know if it was for me?

Any way just to let you know I already have a couple of Discus who live with Angels and giant Danios and others. I was just wandering if a severum could be added? Im beginning to go off the idea now though, it seems risky :/ what do you think?

What size tank do you keep your Discus in?

Just updated my signiture, it has my tank in it. Do you think it would be overcrowded? Ive already been told my tank would be overstocked if I had more fish :-( None of the fish are fully grown (far from it) so maybe I could put more in now and in the mean time persuade the missus for a bigger tank? what do you think?
