I'm interested in soem HRP's and the Sev looks like a Heros Severus to me (mouth brooding Severum) although it is stressed out so hard to say.

How big is the " severum" it looks a bit off to me. The shape does not look very severum like might just be the photo. I agree it looks a bit like a Heros Severus. Do you see any red spots on it's sides?

If you could get more photos once it colors up some it would give us a better idea. Could be a hybrid.

its roughly 4.5" but that is the colour it has always been since he had it! I asked him and he said he bought it as a gold severum! Doesn't look like it to me!
Glenbo1981 if there are eggs and they do become fry I will let you know!

To be honest it looks more like a Ctenopoma to me, I have a Severus female and her fins are really pointy also the body and head shape are quite off. Can you get a pic of them flaring? I really doing think this is a severum though....

It looks kind of like a Pristolepis marginatus - Malabar Leaffish an Indian cichlids . But they are rare. I don't think its a hero at all after looking at it more. I still think it could be a hybrid.

i agree i dont think it is a sev could be a hybrid of some sort. you can see hints of sev in there but the overall shape just isnt right ,

these are the best I can get!

I did have a look at the suggestions on what the fish is and Pristolepis marginatus looks very close except my fish has some faint dark vertical bars and the example fish did not! I also looked at Ctenopoma but the head shape and patterning seems off! Thanks for looking!!!

Def not a Sev IMO, very similar but i would say definately an anabantoid of some sort, perhaps post a photo in that section? I'd have said a perch species, my firsth thought was young giant gourami but miles off now i look again but id say was closer related to it than a severum.

Can't see it being a severum, but I do see how he looks like a ctenopoma. After googling 'Pristolepis marginatus', that may be it. Perhaps the vertical lines you're seeing are stress bars (like Sev's get)?

Closest I could come to a specie identification is a Ctenopoma kingsleyae. Very similar but not sure. Here is the site- http://www.webcityof.com/ffpw3.php?id=281 Another possibility is Pristolepis marginata

I would say it is a Pristolepis fasciatus. Normaly a game or bite fish also used for food in their home of asia. They are very common fish in the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins. Not often found in the aquarium trade but some do make there way into fish stores from time to time. I think that is what you have Im 95% sure.

I've had a look and it is very close! I found some pictures on google images that look very close but the one I have has a blue crescent around each eye! Thanks for looking though!
