Selecting breed stock and

OK OK,

so breeding black bettas is very unlikley and should probably not be undertaken unless you've done a good study into genetics and have bred before.

I have read in jim sonniers genetics that breeding HM's true is almost impossible as there are at least 3 genes responsible and they are a mix of dominant and recessive. so if you bred 2 HM you are unlikley to obtain HM fry, unless you are lucky.

Does anyone know of breeders who have developed a line of HM with a high incidence of HM fry?

The HM trait is both genetic and environmental, so all you can really do is start with good stock, keep your water extremely clean and hope for the best.

Hey, is it possible to cross breed a normal betta with a slim betta? or a red wine betta? those are not variants of the normal betta.

Scientific names? I don't know exactly what species you're talking about, but I *think* both of those are mouthbrooders, so no. I think the only species Betta splendens can hybridise with are Betta imbellis, smaragdina, and sp. Mahachai, which aren't recognised as a true species yet but most likely will be in the near future.

dang, don't have my fish book in the house, in the car with my little bro. i can't give scientific names now...
