You know..his eyes did look crusty at the end, I always thought something was wrong with him..like he had popeye or something.

Poor things! I'll never buy another one if that's what they have to endure to be white.

I wonder if that's why he died...he was one that I came in and he had just died for no apparant reason, if I'm not mistaken, it was back around Xmas time.

He never was just right either now that I think back. He was very docile, never flared, and didn't do much of anything except lounge around. :( And there I thought he was just lazy..he might have been sick the whole time..now I feel bad :(.

WOw!

prints post and files under bedtime reading! :D

I didn't mean that i tought most people culled just had heared some did and wanted to know how common this was. I wouldn't do it at all myself, unless obvious deformity was distressing the fish.

There are so many interesting facts about colour there!

A few more questions to get stuck into -

I know this one is very controversial but - Why not breed veiltails in limited quantities as a speciality? I know that it is dominant over like everything but still want to know the reason why it isn't enjoyed still.

Again i have no opinions on this!

Plakats - are they just a short finned beta splendens or are they a breed in their own right?

Short finned splendens..

The reason no one really breeds veils is because the IBC no longer recognizes them. There's no where for them to show. And again, fish in a cup industry yada yada. If you know a few dozen folks who will take them off your hands -then by all means.

A guy in the Singapore club "Team Betta Bite" told me that they still show and breed veils over there :dunno:

Well you never know how many fry you will get, so saying a "limited quanity" is a rough estimate at best. You may end up with 200+ fry or you may end up with 2....you never know. Many variables come into play in that area.

I'd think a major reason to not breed veils is because you never know what you will end up with..because they are just sporadically bred to death by breeding mills (I guess you could look at them the same way you would a puppy mill basically. They are just hap-hazardly bred together so that thye can push out fry to send out to the major market sources, like walmart, petco, ect.).

It would be very hard to breed a spawn of red veils. It would take you forever to outcross all the other colors that would probably be in your spawns. I'd venture to say to get a predominately red spawn of Veils..you'd have to spawn up to, or over, a F10. But again..that's just my view of it..might not take that many..or it might take more...with veils..there's no way to tell.

Not to mention, you'd basically just be doing it for free..since not many people are going to be willing to pay $10-$20 for a veil like they will the other tail types, plus pay to have them shipped on top of it..when they can just go to their local Walmart and pick one up for $4.

Plakats (PK), I'm pretty sure, are a "tail type" which come with several sub-tail types (ie PKHM, PKCT, PKDT, ect) but I think they need to have their own classification personally.
They are so much different from the long fin variety imho. Their bodies look different, their coloring is sometimes alot better, and they have a totally different temperment.

GSL - Great fish! I love the black one with a splash on his head!

SRC - on the first fist out of the 2 GSL loves, am i correct in thinking that the fish wouldn't be accepted as show quality as it has red wash?

I'm sorry to keep asking but I'm just checking I'm on the right path. :p

Yes it has a significant amount of red wash on it's anal fin.

If I'm not mistaken that color is called Black Lace, I had a crown tail similar to that.

And he was labled as a black lace.

I think you can show the ones with red wash, but the more it has the more faults you accumulate. So you would probably be less likely to win based on that.

A question for wuv on the white opaques-

Is the disease heredatory then? I mean, if you bred two white opaques together, would the babies be white opaques and would they have gout or whatever it is?

Yes. Definitely  All opaques have it.

A guy in my club bred them forever and constantly tried to cure them until he was told that it is impossible to do so. :look: When it would start to grow over the eyes he would medicate them with everything under the sun. Nothing helps. It's weird.

Wow, I never knew that about opaques. I've read that the opaque look is caused by the fish storing guanines in granular packets on their skin rather than as crystals in iridocytes (which is what makes a fish iridescent,) so I guess the disease is what causes this?

Anywho, I look for fish that are pretty good by IBC standards and are appealing to me. I'm definitely interested in trying new things, though, and not just perfecting colour and/or finnage. I plan to start a line of copper-red CT plakats in the future, possibly working in some DT CT plakats just because I wonder what that would look like :p

Synirr,

I would love to see a DTCT. *pictures*

Would that be possible though, (not expert in genetics) i thought the CT would mask the DT gene, or am i just waaay out lol?

Here's some more advice. Never breed to black bettas. The color black is linked to a deadly gene, and some of the babies would die.

I've never heared that before :) Where can i find more info on this opposite armour?

i thought most bettas had black in under the red layer (except those bred without it on purpose) how come it doesn't affect them?

I had heared that female balck bettas were infertile.

sadly you can't. I have this huge fish called Aquarium and Pond fish, published by DK, and it just mentions that breifly. btw, it's oppositearmor, or if you don't wanna spell it out, call me OA.
