Second Spawn

hey,
yeah it is cool except a lot of them are now just laying on the bottom and he wont pick them up. Not even sure if they are alive but the bottom of the tank is pretty dirty. His nest is taking up like a 1/3 of the tupperware so I can't really get in and clean it. I hope they will get up soon :(

OH man, I don't know what I'm doing wrong anymore. I don't think I'm meant to breed fish no matter how hard I try.
At least half of these babies have died. I have maybe 15 left, but they aren't free swimming yet. I'm kind of frustrated but happy too because I got my copper marble guy today and my copper gas girl. They are bigger and maybe if I spawn them, I'll get something better. As for my Synirr fishies, they'll be my lil pets pets and it looks like I wont get any or too many beebees. I shall try again in a few months.

:X aww, don't give up yet! Is your boy still in there with the fry and is he tending to them? He *could* be a bit young and not tending well, but he could also be doing a decent job and it's just hard to spot the fry in the nest. I'd say try to lower the water level an inch or two while disturbing the nest as LITTLE as possible. Use thin airline tubing with a valve and syphon out the water very slowly. Right now, don't worry about the bottom of the tank... you can clean that after removing the male, when the fry are free-swimming. Sticking syphoning tools in there could cause him to eat all of his babies.

Good luck! I hope you get a good number of babies alive and healthy :). Betta spawning really isn't a walk in the park... and just think, THIS is the easy part! heheh

thanks splashluff, he is still tending them but they just don't stay in the nest. I have like 10/40 left. It's funny because the water evaporated, there's maybe 6-7cm of water in there now. I did have it up just a bit over 4 inches when I started and I have a cover for the tub, which covers the whole tub except for like an inch on one end so there's some air.

I don't know what's going wrong... :( I'm thinking it might be the water but I'm sure many people use water that had chlorine in it before. I just dechlorinated mine and let it age. It could be many things I guess...

Wait, is he still in there with them? You might be freaking him out so he's eating them....or are they just dropping dead? Is he mouthing them a lot? I've had fathers who did more harm than good before -_-

He hasn't really touched them at all. I will be taking him out soon but he isn't freaking out much, just kind of laying there, swimming around occasionally, I'll take him out though.

Just a shot in the dark because I can't think of anything else, but are you doing water changes already?

Nope Synirr I haven't. I have maybe 8 or so I think, some I just can't see but there is a lot of yucky stuff on the bottom so I took daddy out and will clean it up a bit today, I'll only take out the dirty stuff.

Hmm, I have no idea what's causing the deaths then... just bad luck, I suppose :dunno:

omg I did water change today, and they were everywhere, just laying on the bottom. I could clearly see them but some weren't moving so I don't know if they have died or not. I just left them. I hope I get some survivors but they hatched 4 days ago and are still not free swimming.

do you guys have fry laying all over the bottom and barely moving too? Seems soo weird. I gave them to my neighbor to look after for the weekend so I wouldn't stress them out taking them all home. That's too much work. I also did a water change but there were so many fry that I syphoned many out, so I had to put them back in with some dirty water. I think not doing a full change will be better for now. Like I said they were all over the bottom though and I didn't see them there. WEIRD
