I noticed last night 2 of the rescue fronts acting odd, one kept standing on its tail. I didnt think too much of it at the time, but just gone to feed them and one of them their mouth has changed shape, the top lip has dropped and there is a visible lump under its jaw. There are no signs of any injury and the fish's colour is good, I am wondering if its a she and she is holding, from what I have read it sure looks like this could be the case. I dont know what to do!!! (apart from skip round the house whooping for joy that is).

If anyone has bred fronts and can give me some advice it would be very much appreciated.

Congrats. Its alwasy nice to see new fish spawn. I would leave her be. If its her first time holding she may spit or swallow the eggs. They have to learn how to do it right sometime. After about two to three weeks. I would look to strip her. I usually catch holding females at night after lights out. Have everything ready before you turn the lights off for the night. ( bucket, hose nets, etc) Once the fish are sleeping use a flashlight to find the fish and then grab her.One thing i learned is not to shine th flashlight directly on the fish. You just want to locate her. Once you do this a couple of time the females can be back in the tank before the have any idea of what happened. I would also get a tank ready for the fry. if you dont have a cycled filetr or the new tank run one on your established tank. By the time the female is ready to be stripped, the new filter will be cycled. Good Luck

Hi Thanks for that info, much appreciated. I always have a spare filter running in one of my tanks for emergancies. She still looks like she is chewing gum obviously rotating the eggs, would be wonderful if she did produce some babies, will wait and see.

to be honest...... id leave her be this time she may spit them. probably swallow them, but from my experiance unless you want to sell and have buyers or a tank big enough for all the fry you will end up over run with little ones whch is good at first but you can imagine after a couple of months what happens, if you leave her and she gets it right you will always get 1 or 2 survive somewhere as long as ya have plenty of cover, i personally used a "shrimp flat" in 1 tank which used granite for the main rock work or in my other malawi tank i have ocean rock and i always find little labs, hongi's, rusty's infact everything i wanna find besides baby livingstonii :(,

oh yeah if you do wanna save the babys to pass on or breed, maybe try the lfs's they might make a deal with you.... then again they might not ;)

I am definately going to leave her, I have not had them long. I couldnt do any more babies at the moment anyway I am overrun.

She is still chewing gum this morning although her pouch looks smaller, she actually came right up to the front of the tank but I couldnt quite see anything in her mouth.

Is your head spinning yet, I suppose the decorating is on hold again  How is the Goldfish with the cloudy eyes. I don't know how you keep up with it all. Let us know if you do have little ones. PS All 5 ellioti doing well and venturing out more and exploring loads. :good:

Spinning! my head exploded ages ago lol. Everything was suppose to be on hold until Jodie's treatment it finished, but my fish seem to think otherwise!!!! Glad the Elliot have settled well.
Ray the goldfish is doing great, I feel so sorry for him at feeding time he can obviously hear the lid being lifted and he is first up gulping for food before I have put any in, he finds it ok and is filling out a bit. Its a shame his previous owner didnt treat his eye injury his sight may have been saved.

Letting her spit in the tank is fine. Don't expect any fry to survive. Fronts will eat smaller fish. I never had a juvie front survie with the adults for more than a day or two. The adults were always looking for the fry, If they knew the fry were in the tank.

Haha, more fronts on the way, I think its time for a large extension for more tanks.

Good luck, you could if you wanted, always remove her and put her in a tank on her own until she spits them out, then put her back in with the others, if you want to try to raise some.

Let me know what happens :)

Put her in a tank and let her spit them on her own. PMSL like where would I put another tank hahahahahaha unless I got a single bed and made hubby sleep on the sofa lol.

I think she may have eaten them, it was treat night tonight and she couldnt resist the prawns for their dinner tonight and she actually ate, unless she just spat the eggs out grabbed some prawn and gathered them up again while the others were feeding as her pouch is still there but smaller again?

She is no longer holding, little sad but also relieved as I would prefer she was in better condition and in the bigger tank before having babies to look after. Maybe next time.

Just noticed another one of the fronts is now holding! so that is definately 2 females in the 9 group. Great they are suppose to be going in their bigger tank this weekend!

I thought the second female had spat her eggs, but I am mistaken, I have been concerned that she is loosing weight but eating only a little, I have seen this morning in her mouth a baby!!!!!!!!! :hyper: so guessing from me seeing her pouch the baby is 18 days old. :hyper:
