Sam's Nano Journal

haha you were robbed  could have bought 2 for that price, I paid £27.85 for the light and postage was extra, a nice little bargain :hey: they will probably be well bid now in price given all the coverage we are giving them

Oh crap, oh well was an xmas present so no loss to me! That is a bargain thou!

Sam

Got lucky Sam that's all, I put in a maximum bid of £50 and let ebay automatically do the rest, still would have paid the £50 though, but yeah nice bargain.

Well something aint right in this tank, the snail has died, the shrimp drop like flies from the moment they are added and I've just watched an otto go crazy across the top of the water and jump out of the tank down the back of the chest of draws (thats gonna smell )

What the hell am I doing wrong!! None of the my other tanks have nearly the problems with mortality this one does. Fortunately the pygmy corys look ok, although I have seen one or two get stuck in the CO2 diffuser but thats another issue, which I've sorted now.

Anyone got any suggestions? I can live with the plants not doing very well but the livestock dieing for no reason is just plain annoying, really getting me down. It cant be NH3 or NO2 I've just tested and both are 0 and the filter is huge.

I have just invested in a solenoid to see if break from CO2 makes a difference. Water temp is also fine.

Im very seriously thinking of giving up on this tank.

Sam :(

Nope - unless it could be deodorant?

EDIT - there is another tank in the room, but that has a lid on it and no problems in there. Guess its possible, I read a recent thread somewhere on here that said airwick type air fresheners are know to kill whole tanks of fish.

Anyone else have any thought on this? Will start a thread in the tropical chit chat

I read that thread as well. The fact that your critters are trying to jump out means that there is something pretty poisonous getting in the water.

I would say the open top could be called a smoking gun.

Thats what Im thinking as well Dave, ill just have to smell for a few weeks   And hope it clears in the water as I do the water changes.

Sam

Just another thought Sam,

Is it since you added the new rocks that your fish and shrimp have been jumping out?

Dave - no, has happened with all the layouts in this tank. I also asked in the shop the rocks are inert.

George - thanks mate, if its not one thing its another, I hate to complain, but somethings I do wonder!

Since posting in the chit chat forum it seems that sprays could well be the cause of the problems. Will get some roll on and see how it goes, it could be to late for the current ottos and shrimp but will leave it a week or so to let the water changes do their thing and see what happens with some new stock, need some new shrimp anyway.

Sam

Have you added any plants that might have previously been treated with copper as this will kill both snails and shrimp pretty quick.

you could probably sell plants on ebay and make some money if they keep growing like that!

nice plants and fish!

~T~ - not added anything new for a while and copper should affect the ottos, but cheers all the same

FK - I had that exact thought last night, the things we do for our fish! Thinking about it, with the misses as well that's a double dose they were getting, fortunately she switched a week or so ago, just me now!

Puddle - Thanks :)

I wonder if it could be the cause of my algae as well... that would be good if it was, kill to birds with one stone :D

Yeh I was thinking that after I posted it, saying that though I have 4 ottos in my nano and they have never really calmed down. They spend most of their time hidden and if I caome near the tank when they are not they freak out and dash about all over the place.I think its the size of tank and im considering taking them out.I have a little brown otto thing too(I forget what there calle..maculata or something)and hes the complete opposite and happily flits about the tank and doesnt bother about anything.
