Salvinis Have Laid Eggs

hi,had a look in the tank this afternoon and guess what.yep,im going to be a dad lol.anyone had salvinis mate/had babies beforeany advice gratefully recieved.

Before considering to raise the fry however, do you have a place to get rid/sell them to when they grow? If not this could be the beginning of a large problem.

Are they in a tank with other fish?

According to my book, the fry should hatch within 3 days and will take newly hatched brine shrimp and powdered food. It also says it's advisable to remove the fry from the parents and also to split the parents as the male will want to breed straight away afterwards and the female won't be ready for it and he'll get aggressive.

dont worry jayjay,i work part time for my lfs so i have no problem sorting out babies but,i doubt they will ever get much bigger as i have 2 x bichirs in the same tank plus an african pike.

It took my bichir around a week to manage to eat rainbow cichlid fry, salvini's are a lot more aggressive; careful of any damage the salvini's may cause to the other fish.

The fry should be pretty well protected in the tank they are in. If you want the fry to live, seperate them and put them in a tank of around 15g for now, feeding fry foods like bbs and microworms, then as they get bigger add crushed flake etc. to the diet.

have about 40 babies now all darting around followed by mum and dad.they are only tiny.how long do you think it would take to get them to a sellable size and how much do you think they would be worth???

Hi man one thing with salvinis, don’t take the babies away from the mum to soon or the male will want to breed again ,I mean start away, and he may kill her, so she needs to get back in condition, by leaving the babies with her that will give her a rest
