Hi all

I know there is difference in opinion on whether salt is good or not in a tropical tank. I added some to my 10g bi-orb recently.

I followed the instructions (actually, I added slightly less than the packet said, ya know, to be cautious n'all) on the packet, but was wondering if there is a way of testing the salt levels in the water?

I test regulary for ammo/nitrItes/NitrAtes + PH etc ect, but i've not read of anybody on here testing levels of salt?

Just wondering....

Why did you want to add salt to the water? Some fish do well with some salt in the water, like mollies (I think) but some cannot have it at all, or so people say.

I don't use salt as I have catfish and/or loaches in all my tanks. I have it around and will use it if a fish is unwell but I see no reason to use it all the time.

Sorry, should have mentioned :) I added the aquarium salt to aid ICH, as recommended by many people in the forum and other places i've read about it.

I upped the temp to 85 and added the salt - symptoms of ich cleared within a day, although i'm leaving the temp at 85 for another few days.

I never added it for the sake of adding it... "if it aint broke...."

You can measure the levels of salt by using a hydrometer but with the levels you would be using for medicinal purposes i doubt it would even register.

Personally i never use it, when treating whitespot (ICH) i use Interpet anti whitespot + which gets rid of all the signs with the first dose without fiddling with the temperature or adding salt.

I use that too. I think it is very good.

salt is evil in a trop tank
Thanks for taking the time to reply, but why do you say this?

I undestand some people use it and some don't, and that some agree with it and some don't, but i've read in several places that this is ok :dunno:

On this very site, in the disease section, it's suggested.

fishforever - fish diseases

Also, the largest Betta site in the world, Bettatalk, suggests it.

Surely, if it was "evil" then there wouldn't be people making these suggestions?
