salt??

Hi,
I have just read Cryosi's lil post in reply to mine and just want to add a couple of things.
1) If goldfish are coldwater fish how come they are bred in warm water and prefer warmer water? My goldfish tank stays at around 25....not very cold is it....
2) If salt is good for healing our skin then surely the same works for fish? Just like ammonia is harmful to us etc....
3) I have looked into tropical fish before getting any, I have done my research with the best of them. I think you'll find that it is through research that many people find sites like this. I think you'll also find that just as others on here agree with the salt, so do people writing about it in reports.
4) I would much rather put something natural in the fish tank than go out and buy a load of chemicals to put in the tank. Surely since salt is present in our bodies and our food it is in the earth therefore the water? As others have so eloquently put it, plus I know nothing about the science behind it all, I just know it is there.
5) In a way it was to treat infection as I got 5 guppies and 4 of them died...due to the non alkalinity of the water and the shock of the change in Ph......
6) Just to be fecicious cos I'm feeling that way out....what happens in the wild? No one treats them there at all they just get eaten right? So either you're gonna help the fish or kill it. Simple.

Am I done? Yes I believe I am. Just because some of us are new to the hobby doesn't mean we're any less interested in keeping our fish happy and healthy. I do believe you to have ranted on a truly wrong footing. End of story....but at least I know who to come to for advice if I have problems....
Ok, my rant is over now!

oooh....how do you know your guppy is gonna have her babies? I'm getting fed up of waiting...and watching....and waiting....and watching....She's hiding underneath a plant now!

sorry going to speak for cryosi here and say that i don't think he meant to imply that anyone here was not interested in keeping their fish healthy. if you weren't then we would not be here. alot of people keep fish or work with fish that have no clue to what they are doing.

yes, goldfish are coldwater fish. if you raise thieir temp will they survive. probably. are they happy and healty? who knows. in the wild fish are meant to adapt to their surroundings. no one is there to make a 10% water change on the lakes once a week. not a job i would want to apply for. can fish go without all the water changes? yes, but you are also increasing their rish to disease. do tehy get disease in the wild? of course, but mother nature has a way of taking care of it's own. take out the mother nature element and you become in essence mother nature. if you want the fish to be encouraged to spawn, you can lower the temps before a storm or rain. why? that is what happens in nature. also look at the amount of water in a lake and compare it to the water in your aquarium. you are increasing the elements that will greater the risk for disease by the volume of water. in the winter i tend to do smaller water changes cause of the heat on in the house and the water evaporates more rapidly than in the summer with the air conditioning on.

also fish in the wild are not given a regimented diet like in the aquarium. temperament can be effected by the amount of food available. there is not someone there with a big shker of flake ready to feed them at a certain time. they may go without food for days. the fish in captivity are conditioned to this is what happens at this time. tehy adapt.

just a thpought. kinda foggy right now.

hey minxnfella ... as a new fishkeeper myself (about a year), try and forgive cryosi ... must be something in his water   but cry is normally very helpful.

you'll find here that at times the advice/experience of two people is directly contradictory. that's when i then go to other sites I trust/know and see opinions there, some are forums others are just reports, studies. those too are often contradictory. if it's a how to cure the fish question, after gathering the contradictory advice i look at the fish and make a best guess.

but don't write off cryosi ... that's one who know's what he's saying ...

my 2 cents.

oh, i wouldn't add salt to goldfish. and i've stopped adding generally to my tropical fish community tank too. having a problem now and debating whether to add or not and am really, really hesitant, though I may cave and add a bit. if you have freshwater fish from a store that have not been kept in salt, odds are they have never been in salt, and you could be shocking them. sometimes, the wild doesn't matter. most platies, for example, that you'll buy have never been in the wild. goes for lots of other fish you'll be keeping as well. lots of this is about not shocking fish.

that's why most here say don't mess with pH levels unless they are astronomically high ... again, fish in your area store will already be acclimated to the pH you have in your home, so a change will be a shock.

good luck!

sheshhhhhhhhhh went to work and all heck broke loose.
Personaly I think cry was just giving his opinion. As we all do and have. Even though it is diff. than mine and a few others lets respect each others way of fish keeping.

Now, just to CLEAR something up:
cry has always givin good advice. I really don't think this should start a whole debate or flame war.
We are all intitled to our own opinions and are intitled to our views from experience or from books and .
I really doubt cry had any intentions to ruffle fins.

Why Can't We All Just Get Along. :D :p  :hyper:  :fun: :-(

i never had any intention of rufling any feathers! i expressed my opinions, just getting fed up of people saying i put salt in my tank, my cories are dying! helpwell i told them before i dont agree with salt in tank and that they hate slat int he tank. now if i upset you then * sorry i apologise* write me off if you want to! i dont care, plenty of other people have been helped by me inthe past( a long one) and many more will be helped, so my views are different! so is everyone.

thanxs for jumping in for me guys and gals while i not been here much appreciated.

final note i did post a link about salt a web link with all the info about why, how, what! see i may not agree but i will try to help.... my apologies!

Just thought I wouls add my two cents....

I don't add salt...never have...never will!!! Not even for ich!!!

Hey Semper...good advice bout lowering the temp before a rain to help induce breeding ;) ;) ;)< but you forgot part of your lesson grasshopper....

The best way to lower the temp at this time is to do a partial water change with slightly cooler water.....remember????

To salt...or not to salt....the world will never know!!!!

Grasshopper

LOLOL, Know what you mean CM, even though Im expressed my wiew I RARELY use salt myself. I do add to a few tanks because for some odd reson these fish spawn better and act alotl livelier. ?????

Beats me ???

Cry again NO HARD feelings. Forget about it and keep doing what you have been. Giving advice. Yes we all have diff. opiniuons on EVERYTHING. thats why we are this insane race called Human.

Wait, did I just say WE ? I ment you guys are insane. Forgot I am NOT.

Points noted and taken....
Anyway, cryosi...you appear to know about cory type things, I don't. So could I have some help please. I want to get some catfish types in my tank (sorry I'm so technical) and the bloke at the shop reckons I should get cories. Now, apart from the fact that they will clash with my tank (joke) and I don't find them particularly attractive, if I have salt in the tank which I do, it's bad for them anyway right? So, what can I have? I like the plecs but I don't know what's going to be best for the tank. It just has 4 guppies in it at the moment, its a 3ft tank, and in a couple of years if not sooner I should have a bigger tank for them, so size isn't really a huge problem as long as it doesn't happen over the course of siz months...
Does this make any sense???
any help would be appreciated! And there really are some great diplomats in here!
Cheers

lol mixnfella, try and repost that post in catfish cradle it'll get more response ;)

well considering you keep salt in the tank i would advise against putting in any kind of cory or plec! sorry but corys dont like salt. there are some brackish water cats you can get like Columbian Shark Catfish(Arius jordani), up to 10 inches ,White Tip Shark Catfish (arius seemani)
gets upto 14inches. would need a 40" tank
