A few of my bettas have a little fin rot, and I have been keeping their tanks clean and adding salt, but nothing seems to do much. Are salt dips a good idea, or not? If so, how much salt in a one gallon container, and for how long should they be in there?Several people on here have advized salt dips but I wanted to double check.

Thanks a lot in advance.

No, I haven't done any salt dips yet, just adding a pinch of salt in the tanks. I was wondering if salt dips are a good idea, and how you do them.

I've used Marinie salt dips on my girls with Ich and they were great. You use about an eighth a teaspoon for a coffee cup full of water. Leave them in for 3-5 minutes. Repeat up to 3 times a day. It's all the extra stuff in the marine salt that really helps.

I didn't find that just regular aquarium salt dips helped at all, especially if you're already putting some salt in their tanks anyways.

Salt dips scare me. I just use 1/4th doses of Melafix or full doses of Bettafix on finrot, and if that doesn't work I resort to Maracyn.

Is melafix removed from carbon, or can I leave the carbon in there?

You have to remove the carbon when using any medicine, otherwise the carbon will just absorb it and it won't be doing any good. :/

My fish has fin and tail rot--he was doing better for 6 days and then wham!!! it came back at him BIG time and now he has lost what he grew back plus more tail and a chunk of the lower fin. I am devastated. He was such a beautiful fish when I got him too. I will have to see about maracyn soon, he is on melafix now and has been for quite awhile too. I think I will lose him to this. GRRRR!

1 Tablespoon of Aquarium salt per 1 gallon of water. (make sure the salt is dissolved and even dispersed in the water before adding the fish)

Have the water be atleast 78 degrees 80 is preferred.

Leave the fish in no longer then 10 minutes..but watch him carefully the entire time.

If the fish appears to be rolling over on it's side (passing out) it's time to take him out. Place him in fresh tank water and you should see him immediantly perk right back up.

You can do this up to 3 times per day, or just once a day..depending on how bad the fin rot is.

I always make a gallon up and use about 2-4 cups at a time (so the fish has room to swim around a little bit) if I have a fish with significant fin rot..as I know I'm gonna have to use the dip numerous times.

I've treated several fish this way, all of them recovered much more quickly then the ones I did not use this on (I did an experiment just to see)..and none suffered any ill effects from the dips.
