I have a friend of mine who's betta has a parasitic infection (not mine thank god, all healthy they are) and has turned to me for help. I was going to direct him to this forum, but he has no computer. anyways the question i have is?

Can I give the betta a salt bath? I know salt kills parasites, but I don't want to hurt the betta any worse.

thx,

richard

Well, here's what I've heard from other forums. A recent post was a betta ahd popeye and someone suggested salt and this worked. But someone posted do not use to much salt as this will hurt the betta but a little bit of salt is fine. So I would say use a bit of salt but not to much, or you could always wait for a true betta keeper to ocme on, I'll ask on another forum as well ok?

thank you for looking elsewhere, this is the only forum I can get to from work. our firewall blocks the rest for some reason.

So far there has been one reply from a betta breeder who I know sort of and has very beautiful bettas and is well knowledged about them keeping them for over 10 years. Here is his reply:

They don't work. I tried it once and it killed the betta after the betta had been moved back to fresh water.

I'll try it anyway, I won't just move the betta directly back to fresh water. I do water changes over a period of a week to remov the salt gradually. thx for the research!!!

I use aquarium salt in my tanks.

They are freshwater, but if you buy brand-aquarium salt, made for aquariums, and put the right dosage in it doesn't seem to harm the fish at all.

I put it into my 10 gallon, and man, 1 tablespoon of salt seemed like a lot of salt for that tank, but meh, it didn't hurt the fish any. I would put the betta in a 1 gallon something and put in 1/5th of a tablespoon of aquarium salt.

The dosage on my stuff is 2 Tablespoons per 10 gallons, so thats 1/5 of a table spoon for 1 gallon.

In my 1 gallon tank with one gold fish I put in 1/4 teaspoon, I don't know if its right or not, but he seems ok.

the betta has a 10 gallon to himself. I salted the tank last night right after a 25% water change. I will swing by my m8's house tonight and check the little guy out. I added bettamax to the water as well. the salt is just a secondary measure.

btw: I added 1 1/2 tbsp to the 10 gallon. .5 tbsp more than what the container said, but tis is for a salt bath, not just adding salt for regular purposes. I will perform a 25% water change this evening and then do a 10% before each bettamax treatment. after all treatment is complete I will perform 5% daily for about 10 days to lower the salt level in the water.

the boy was looking better after work last night. he is no long pooing long white strands, but has nice health looking small brown ones. I know it's gross but hey, he's getting better. :D

uhhhhhhhhhhh congrats? :look: :/

i think that as the beta has scales it is ok for a slat bath half an hour should do it. the other option is death

Well,

My m8's betta is making a full recovery, I have performed a 25% water change to dilute the salt some and I have him performing 5% water changes daily over the next 10 days to slowly remove the salt. He will do a 25% water change on the 11 day mark from now so as to not stress the fish.

I've keep my Beta in with my livebearing fish with the normal ! tablespoon per 5 gallons. I started 2 years ago with a ten gallon, now I 've moved up to a 30. So I've had Mr. Beta for two years without a problem until recently. He has blown up like a balloon, and so is in my hopspital tank. He does not seem to be in bad spirits and is still as happy as before. So does anyone know if Betas change when they get old, are they prone to tumors? Anyway it is always a good idea to have some aquariam salt in all tanks, I read that somewhere, but especially for livebearers, and that is my specialty. So I've always have remebered about the salt. Anyway good luck with your Mr. Beta!

Your Friend,

Angela Michaella Balbuena
