I'm in the process of getting a 55 gallon tank. I plan to use a mixture of artifical and live plants in a white sand substrate. The filter I am going to get will be a Fluval 404 going to a Marineland Bio Wheel Pro 60. I want to get an African Butterfly, a Peacock eel, and a Black Ghost Knife. Is this setup sufficient for them? If so what other and how many fish could I possibly put in with them, of the same size of course? Could I put them in with Koi and possibly have no problems? :dunno:

I have a 10 gallon tank with 4 koi, 2 plecos, 2 kissing fish, and one chinese algae eater,I'm about ready to pawn off on someone else. He's murdered a few of the fish I used to have. :grr:

Thanks for your help

OMG!

edited for bad language, please do not try to bypass the swear filter

I think what the above poster is trying to say is
10 gallons in nowhere near a big enough tank for koi
and neither will a 55 gallon tank for that matter.
Koi are very large fish and live for 50+ years
they sholud be kept in ponds only.

Plecos also grow very big as will the chinese algea eater

The koi are going to an outside pond come the next spring. I'm in the process of building a small 700 gallon just for them. BTW I have a clue. This setup is just temporary for them. My plans had been for them to be in the pond this summer but things did not go very well. Also they are only 4 inches long. Please be nice. I am not a total newbie or idiot as you think.

I thought I was being nice :/

Danio, you were and trying to very helpful, much appreciated, but the other. Well I will be nice myself on them.

That really won't do. They will be stunted by then. You should either find another home for them or ask your lfs to take them.

Koi are really not suitable as aquarium fish, as Danio has already stated. Even temporarily. You should not have bought them until you had the correct environment already setup.

Ok, I realize now that I have a problem with my koi. But and ideas or suggestions about my soon to be 55 US gallon aquarium? Ive been doing a little more research about the canister filters. I know a lot of you use the Eheim brand, but what about the XP3 or even Via Aqua 750? I am on a limited budget. I want the best bang for my buck.

I had a goldfish in a bowl for 4 years as a child and then moved it onto a pond. The bowl was far from ideal, but the fish is still alive now and about 18 inches in length. (he's 18 years old). I wouldn't worry too much about your koi getting stunted.

Poor Puffa, you just want to know about your 55g tank plans doncha. :)
Well, let's see. The African butterfly will be fine in a 55; they only need like a 15 or so. Just put some floating plants and have a cover.
The eel will probably be ok, although I don't know anything about them. If it's anything like a ropefish as far as size is concerned, I think that'll be fine.
The BGK will be a problem though. Like many knifefish, the BGK will get big. 100g-minimum big. And they grow fast, as I've heard. I researched them for a while as I have been trying to set up a tank almost identical to the one you've propsed (I also want to throw in some pictus or a raphael). A much better choice for you if you want a knife is the African brown knife. It stays at 8-12 inches and should be ok in your tank. Lemme know if you have any questions about the ABK; I've looked into it a little.
Hope I've been of some help!
