i dont have sw but i read that the rule of thumb for sw is 1 inch of fish to every 5 gallons is this true

The problem is that inches per gallon really is for beginners and is used to make sur they dont overcrowd the tank to fast. This rule simply isnt accurate when you become an experienced Reef keeper. For example, a dwarf lionfish "should" be classed as a medium fish? It turns out more waste ammonia and other materials than a fish far larger than this due to its lifestyle. What is more important is to find out the requirements of the fish you intened to keep. Tangs for example are open water swimmers and travel great distances during their day, therefore a large tank is needed.Triggers, puffers and lionfish tend to be messy eaters and thus it means they need powerful filtration. They can create enough waste for 3 or 4 fish of the same size.

The problem with the 1" per 5g rule is that, as mentioned, it is blown out of the water when you look at 'oddball' fish such as Moray Eels that can reach 12" - 18" but do not require a lot of space as they live in the rockwork. It's good as a stocking guide for beginners but nothing compares to a lot of research about the fish you want to keep.

ok thanks i was just curious for now since i still live with my parents and for 4 more years i will just stick to freshwater since i am not allowed to get anymore tanks
