The LFS has got some Ruby barbs. I havent heard of these before and was wondering if anyone had kept these before. had any info.

The ones in the shop were very similiar to tigar barbs but apparently they colour into red and black as they mature.

I wondered if these are shoaling or aggressive or what

Any info greatly appreciated.

Barbus nigrofasciatus is a shoaling fish I frequently recommend to people with enough space to keep them happy. They can grow quite easily to 2½"/70mm, like to be in a group of at least 6 and enjoy some open swimming space.

They are nothing like as aggressive as Tiger Barbs, although I would still avoid slow moving really long finned fish in the same community, (I've never had trouble but some people I trust have told me they have).

Easy to keep, easy to feed, easy to breed.

Try to be sure you have at least 2 males in the group. 2 males often perform the "spiral dance" where they colour up to their brightest, (often better then when spawning), and whirl round and around each other moving up and down as they do.

An often overlooked fish because when young, and crowded together in a dealers tanks, they don't look so good. Nice little things.

I have had ruby barbs for a few weeks now and have had no problems. The males do change colour and its great to watch. My barbs are in one of my tanks with catfish and I find they like catfish food as well as everyother kind of fish food. They are not fussy eaters and seem to have their own personalities. :)
