Rio 300 Ideas?

Mmm maybe, I still like the idea of a mbuna tank or getting a gold severum.

I also like the spotted climbing perch.

Ctenopoma Acutirostre, or Ctenopoma Weeksi are both stunning fish, and when they get larger (mine are about 5") are really really spectacular, cant wait to see them at 8" :D

considering you like the oddball fish (elephants) etc i would highly recommend the reasonably hardy "Polypterus ornatipinnis" or ornate birchir. Very colourful if you get a decent supplier and not too expensive. Great character too.

I'd also consider keeping the angel display tank you were thinking of. Although a little boring to start with they require roughly the same water conditions as Discus and so upgrading to Discus later would be reasonable. Once you have the angel display at its optimum (perhaps dabbling in breeding) you could go for Discus at minimal expense and upheaval. Might consider and RO unit in the future with Discus them too. A second advantage to the Angel display is that once you are more confident in your water quality you could add your elephant nose. Some debate on how many to add but I'd go for one and add another 3-4 a fortnight later. Remember that your experience is constantly growing and your tastes will change - angels.... with elephants... then discus later on when you're more confident???

Have you considered black ghost knife fish - beautiful (but not to be mixed with elephants).

I own the Tetra EX700 on a Rio 180 and have loved it. Maintenance is a breeze and it has run for almost 2 years without a problem. Mechanical filtration is superb, which is what you want for the larger show fish. Would definitely recommend the EX1200 for your Rio 300.

Good luck!

*just a little news, I paid £286 for the tank and cabinet, brand new!*

Where did you manage to get it for that price? If you don't mind sharing.

I wouldn't go for African cichlids of any kind, personal taste, you may like them of course. You could have the barbs, severum and the climbing perch in the same tank and add a few more fish around them.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

How many angels would I be allowed to have in a tank that size, the normal breeding pair or more?

JayJay - I got the tank from GiantPetstore in norwich.
They're clearing out all their tanks they've got and setting low prices to get rid of them all quickly. The rio300 happened to be the last one, it was on display but had no fish, nor no water, all brand new :)

They also had a 320litre tank for sale, maybe a rio400 display tank for sale with fish in *not sure if it was for sale* but they also had a marine tank for £1020 a trigon 190 and 350.

They don't have the tanks on the site except miniture ones, but if you can get down to the store, cos after they've all gone they're not ordering anymore in!

Also I think I may leave the cichlids for a while, as I do like to have bright green plants in my tank, and cichlids are known to dig plants up I think.

So the main display I think will be Angels. Any ideas of how hardy zebra plecostamus' are? I may try and get 2 and POSSIBLY breed them.

I have also noted down a Eheim External Filter... or so many to choose from! Tis hard.

I just want to supply the best external filter for the fish once they go in.

A tiny bit big for a Rio 300 ;)

I've kept Gold Severums in a Rio 180 before, they're nice fish but do get a bit bland after a while.
Zebra plecos are very expensive fish, they are well over £100 each and you need about 6 to get a breeding group going.

I highly recommend, as another member recommended, ornate birchirs as they are truly stunning fish with loads of personality :)
