After pablo passed away the other week, I'd like to get a new betta in the near future as soon a I've re-done the tank. I'm debating between going for a 'fancy' betta (such as from finzntailz) or a 'rescue' betta (from pets at home or another small lfs).

I've overheard some of the bad advice that p@h gives about stocking and I am aware that another lfs doesn't always ask about the current setup. Pablo was a 'rescue' and I'd like to ensure that I can at least give 1 betta a nice safe home. But then I see all the 'fancy' bettas like the ones finzntailz have and I'm swayed.

It seems a bit of a silly question really, but any thoughts on which way to go? I'd love to get more than one betta, but that's not a possibility at the moment without splitting my 28L and I don't think I'd want to give a betta only 14L worth of space as personally I don't think I'd want to keep a betta in anything much less than 28L. It'll probably be a few weeks until I get another betta though (as the wood I plan on ordering will most likely need soaking for a bit), so I'm not in a big hurry.

Thanks :)

Just get the fish that you want pablo, if you see a fish in a LFS that you like get it but if you prefer the look of a "fancier" one get it instead! Someone is going to buy those bettas in the LFS, it doesn't have to be you :)

Looking at the prices of those Betta's online I'd say they're way to expensive. I find most of the crowntail's they sell at LFS for 7.99 is too much :/. But I'm a frugal person so don't mind me.
(I much prefer rescuing to purchasing show quality, but AlmostAwesome has a good point, someone's going to buy the LFS Betta's anyways) I just take pride in knowing that I probably give them a much nicer home than where they may have ended up.

That last point of yours is rather similar to my own thoughts - knowing that they've got a nicer life than they might otherwise get. I know what you mean about the prices of bettas online, though personally I'd be willing to spend it for the right fish ;)

Same person I get mine from ;) DT & CT Males are £5, SD Males £8.50, Dragon HMs £15 ;) HM/SD Females £4!

I noticed finzntailz have some stunning dumbo HMs, but at just under £51 including postage, it's a bit much - do you know if they have any similar males by any chance? I don't mind paying good money, but that's a bit much for me. I'd prefer around £30 myself. Do they have a website or anything?

Check both resources.Although, I would rather rescue from my local LFS (not Petco nor Petsmart). If you buy a sick little betta from either store because you have a very kind heart, you are in-directly helping these large chain stores hurt many animals under their care. So are trust-worthy, small scale store is the best choice.
The pros and cons of fancies:
-Most are found online and therefore must be shipped. This is bothe expensive and sometimes may harm the wellfare of your buddy
-Fancies are beautiful
-Most are well cared for and (in some cases) female bettas from the same family can be housed in a sorority tank
Hope this helps!
