Is it possible to take away the "copy the persons entire post before adding my own comments" button?

I can't stand it! it drives me nuts.

Someone clicks "reply with quote" and copies the whole thing again with all the pictures and everything, then adds one line of text to the bottom as their reply. They always do it with really long posts too so you have to scroll down through everything you already read to see their answer/comment.

Could we just have the ordinary reply button and people can just cut and paste any lines of text they wish to quote?

Oh and don't do it to me here....it's not funny!!! my head is gonna pop it annoys me so much!

cant you use the ADD REPLY button
Yes indeed. But that's not what she meant. She meant that some people do not select certain parts to quote - but just hit "quote" and end up quoting loads of photos for absolutely no reason at all. And I think she's suggesting to just have the "quote" button removed alltogether.

A bit like just quoting this whole post below ;)

That can be very annoying for us users with computers as advanced as a carrot which mine is.... runs slower than a axolotl on land it does!!!

lol Bloo, that's exactly it.

Yes and I can imagine it is a pain for those with a slower connection - though I hadn't thought of that, it must really slow things down for the dial-up brigade and the veteran machines.

Id hate to have to run back and forth and copy and paste lines I wanted. I find it much easier to chop and change after Ive qouted, but then again I am on Broadband! :p So I can see your issue! I don't think inconveniencing everyone by taking away a button would be wise though. It would annoy me just as greatly to have no quote button!

I have seen a board program that minimizes quotes automatically, and you then just enlarge ones you want to read. I don't know if that hack is available for this board, but William could have a look in ACP or Invision (or wherever you go for such a thing for IPB. :p )

another board i go on has it set so if you quote what the last person said, and they've quoted the person before them it just adds in the last reply and cust out everything before then. makes it much more manageable.

it doesn't take away the idiots who quote 50 pics just to say 'nice tank' at the bottom though

it does rile me too, but the quote function is v useful, if i'm looking through a topic and want to reply to or comment on someones post but there's been 5/6 posts afterwards then quoting it makes much more sense.

Some people haven't grasped how to quote normally though, so they just quote the whole thing. Personally I don't find it bad at all, it just means scrolling a tad more.

I think the problem may stem from the fact that clicking on "reply" at the bottom of a post ( not just "quote") also brings up the whole of that post in your reply. I made that mistake initially - because on other forums, clicking on "reply" - even on an actual post, doesn't *quote* that reply unless you specifically tell it to ( still with me  ?)

I think that many people haven't figured out that if you want a reply with *only* your own words on you have to go to the bottom of the *thread* and click on reply *there* instead.

Maybe getting rid of the reply button on each post would make it clearer? Leaving the Quote button would mean that people could still quote that post as needed, but be less misleading for people who just want to reply.

However, as I have no real idea what the advantage of having both buttons is, maybe I should keep my trap shut, as there probably is one, and by suggesting taking one of them away, I will probaby look like a total numpty

the only reason I can think to have two buttons is to simplify matters. If you want to quote three people you click quote in each of there posts then you have to go all the way down and click reply. If you want to quote one person you just have to click reply.

Aha! Thanks Torrean - *light bulb goes off over head* I knew there must be a reason

So, removing "reply" from each post and leaving the "quote" button might work then - you'd still be able to quote as many people as you wanted, or (by only clicking "reply") none at all.

Of course, I guess the software might not even support that option - or it might just be a whole lot of hassle to do for a relatively minor niggle ( although one that does, admittedly irritate me a bit, and must make things particularly slow for anyone on dial-up. It can also make threads difficult to read, sometimes, if there are reams and reams of irrelevant quotes that the poster isn't actually directly referring to)

It would be unfortunate if the "quote" button had to be removed just because a few people can't figure out how to use it properly.

Absolutely. But my suggestion was to consider removing the *reply* button - well, the one from each individual post, at any rate - and just leave the reply button at the bottom of the thread. I suspect that people click on "reply" not realising that the "reply" button on each individual post automatically includes the entire of that post in their reply, whether they intend it to or not.

I would like for there to be a way to quote only the highlighted text rather than the entire post. Have any of you tried to quote someone who quoted someone? It's a real hassle and hard to get right. copy and paste I guess but then either people can't tell it's a quote easily, or you have to type all that code crap yourself.
