hi

i went into my LF's today to look at the costs of fish for the new tank i am getting and saw that 3 red lined torpedo barbs were £45!

is this the normal price for this fish?

my store (which tends to be pretty expensive) had huge ones a few month back. (probably like 5- 6 inches). They were $70 US. Now they have small ones (like 2-2.5 inches) and the asking price is $25. I'd love to get a shoal, but that is a lot of scratch.

thats not a suprising price for them.

most places nr. me have them around 20-30 each. and they are inly 2 inches in size.

hi
ive seen them in the lfs around us for again £20 - £30, they grow quite big. dont really know why theyre so expensive but we only started seeing them in lfs a couple of years ago. beautiful but you need a biggish tank for a group of them.

they are expensive because they are one of the most beautiful adult cyprinids money can buy.
i should know they live wild in the river that runs through my in-laws estate in india.

they grow huge and there colors are amazing.

have a look on theplantedtank.net and look for medicineman he has built a custom tropical glass pond in a sunken garden, and has a massive school of these adult fish and they are breathtaking to watch when they devour o whole iceberg lettuce in a few minutes.

yes i have 5 .
originally got 3 for £40 2 "
then another 2 1 1/2" at £12.50 each.
had about a month and are growing nicely.
lovely fish go 4 it.

My hope is that one day these fish will be tank bred and more affordable to all. I have read that the local Indian collectors are paid 10c per fish so someone is making alot of money out of these guys!

I also read that wild stocks are now depleted by 85% which is also a concern if true. C,mon breeders, how hard can it be, i mean they are barbs after all! ;)

Guys

Shirley Aquatics have them @ 7.95 each 2-4Inches in Hard Water in Kenilworth (Blooms Garden Centre A452)

Around my area (Derby/Nottingham UK) their about 14 quid for 2-3inch ones. Thats the cheapest Ive seen. I agree with the other comments thats the high price is because they are such colourful and good looking fish

£45 each is a bit steep unles you mean for all 3?

On average 1-2" are going for £10 each.

Large specimens can go upto around £30 each.

I have never paid more than £10 each.

They are being commerically tank bred, but many are still being imported. The prices are coming down as you can see from other contributers to the thread. I would not buy a single one for £45!

i agree they are beautiful fish and i would love to have them however the price is just way to much, according to my lfs and a website i found they are very hard to get and and on there way to become endangered which is why they are so much

Hi All, I bought a couple of these fish yesterday, they were priced at £10 each or two for £19 at my local shop yet another shop not to far away was selling them at £18 each so that is quite a difference.

Steve.
