Hi,

In my tank (Juwel Rio 180 with live plants) I currently have the following:

5 x Clown Loach
4 x Dwarf Gourami
4 x Leopard Danio
1 x Cherry Barb
1 x Female Kribensis - widowed :(
1 x Algae Eater

Obviously, I could do with a male Krib and some more Cherry Barbs.

The top of the tank often looks empty, can you recommend me some top swimming fish? I was thinking Three Spot Gouramies but should I just get more Cherry Barbs?

Thanks!

first the clowns will outgrow the tank, so probably best get rid of them unless your planning on a extra large tank, any idea on the algae eater? it could be anything that grows upto 24" which is too big for the tank, a pic would be your best bet at identifying it :good:

My guppys swim at the top but sounds like your after something a little bigger. If you dont want to buy a shoal of cherrys but feel bad about the lonely one buy it a mate. Cherry barbs will be pretty happy as a pair(male, female) leaving you a little more room for fish you want more. :good:

needle nose? or would he be to aggressive?

do u mean a needle nose gar! if so that is the worst idea ever! they grow in excess of 2ft long and would empty that tank once they hit about 5 inches long!

for a strict top dweller your looking at killifish but since they need species tanks thats not really a very good idea, a friend of mine manages to keep a pair of golden panchax in a community tank with little troulbe maybe they would be ok :good:

we really do need to know what the "algae eater" is first, that might have the tank fully stocked, or have to be removed making more room for other fish

Thanks for the responses, i'll try and get a picture of the Algae Eater to help identify.

At the moment, I think more Cherry Barbs are the way to go.

when you say top swimmers do you want fish who are literally hanging right at the surface all the time, or ones just in the top third (roughly) of the tank?

needlenose gar would not suit this size tank at all they are way to skittish and would bash themselves to death on the glass
and they would/could eat some of the fish
they dont get 2ft either more like 1

I'm looking for something that will occupy the top third of the tank......

Meanwhile, here is a pic of the Algae Eater:

That looks like an Otocinclus cat fish, Otocinclus Affinis maybe? How big is it? Is it around an inch long? If so it's probably harmless. However, if it's a chinese algae eater then it's a ticking time bomb. SAEs have a bad habit of turning from algae eaters into fish eaters as they grow in size. It's probably an oto though, in which case it's harmless.

Just curious, how well did your Kribs get along with your other fish? I wanted to get some but I was told they were too territorial.

was thinking of the long nose gar which i have seen called the needle nose gar but oh well :p

the algae eater you have is a CAE they get highly agressive as they grow, they have been known to take out the eyes of much larger fish  HERES forum profile :good:
