ive had these moonlight leds on for 2 nights now and when i approach the tank the fish are very skittish and start swimming all over the tank as if they are scared....

is this normal?

do they see me as a predator now they cant see me as well....?

sounds strange ,i've got green spotted puffers which are a bit skittish when the lights are on if people are walking past the tank, but when i have the moon lights on they are fine it's as if they can't see you.

is it directly after the switch from main lights to leds?

My leds are positioned at the front of the tank which keeps the rear dark. When the switch occurs most of the fish move to be under the lights in a bit of a panic.....after a while they get used to it and return to normal behaviour. I have not found them to act any differently than normal if I approach the tank.

my led's are positioned on the rear flap on the hood as this was the best place to fit them so i could do maintenance on the tank easier. the lights cover about 2 foot out of the 4 so the ends are still very dark its just the middle that is illuminated.
they go nuts straight after the change over then settl down but if i approach the tank after they shoot all over the place, especially the denisonii barbs...

isit just a case of them getting used to it?

yeah I'd give them some more time to adjust, but if it's only when the switch happens or when you move to the tank then it shouldn't be a problem ongoing.....unless you are a nocturnal practicer of the Hokey-Kokey in your lounge???

 only when required.....

I think this differs from fish to fish. Some fish like the lower light of blue LED's like my wild discus... and some hate it and become skittish i.e my wild angelfish. Give them time to adjust and sit still for a while when only the LEDs are on then you should be able to view them without them freaking out.

Yeah I have had same problem before with my fish but they got used to it. I had a mix of white and blue light and when I used to just leave on the blue light they would do the same thing hide away but later they got used to it. Its a good idea to stay around the tank once you've put them on and slowly they get used to the light and you being near the tank. Before even hand movement used to scare them lol.

I am afraid that your lighting is more than simply allowing you to see your fish Mattlee. It is allowing your fish to see you walking about the tank arrangement. That means to me that any stocking based on the concept of the fish not knowing what is going on is flawed. Maybe we can agree to any action going forward that does not violate the principles involved in any scientific research. I look forward to haring from you since you are expressing a perspective outside our usual source of materials. As others before me have said diversity of opinion means variety in our responses. Thanks again for your perspectives. We could not truly succeed without that input.

oldman thats gone way over my head im affraid......

What I was trying to express was a simple joy that the work you are doing with your light system may give us a chance to learn from your experiment. Your fish do not seem to be acknowledging that the lighting is nothing more than moonlight would be. Instead they seem to be acting as if they could see their surroundings quite well. I hope this makes some sense to you.

yes thats perfectly clear now.....

the power pack has a dimable switch on it but to be fair if you have it too low its a waste of time for our viewing but may make it less visible for the fish to see me.... its currently half way as i didnt want it too blue anyway and wanted dark areas to make it seem a bit more natural...
