If this guy spends most of it's time upside down then it's possibly a Synodontis nigriventris (the true upside down catfish). they grow to around 5" but prefer to be kept in groups of about 5 as they are shoaling fish (although I'd get a positive ID before getting more as some Synodontis species can only be kept by themselves e.g. Synodontis eupterus!)

They love eating bloodworm, catfish tablets, algae wafers - most things really. They're so cute and loads of fun to watch.

Not sure forgotten how to steralise plants.
Ask in the plants section of the forum as you can fetch parasites like leeches and anchor worm into the tank.,

So here goes my question. Was this a fully cycled tank that you have found him in? By the sounds of things, you were only starting and getting plants established with no other fish yet. If that is the case, you have just enterred the fish-in cycle mode which can be a bit difficult to deal with. If this is the case, there is a link in my signature to fish-in cycling that should help you understand what to do.

Yes, very good point OM47, OZeN has only been here 3 days and we're all having fun comparing chocolate catfish patterns to black and white catfish patterns and the poor catfish may not be getting any O2, so to speak!

ell managed to get some better close up pics of my new fish... here they are...

and what would be the best way to cycle my tank with him in it as iv spoken to the LFS that sold me the plant and they said they wount take him back and they wount look after him for me... so what could i do?

You mean they've said they're willing to look after him while you do a fishless cycle? That would be fantastic. A fishless cycle is about a million times easier than a fish-in cycle.

Have a big bucket? Keep him in that with an airstore and dont feed him much while the tank cycles. Just change the water frequently. He should be ok for a few weeks. I kept 5 inch pleco in a 5 gallon bucket with a rock to hide behind like that for 2 months and he did fine. I just gave him an algea wafer every week or so. I didnt even put in a heater, however if I had a spare I probably would have.
