So you were right my chinese algae eater started getting aggressive chasing my other fish round, so I went back to lfs who agreed to take him back as a tank cleaner.

the story continues....they recommended another algae eater a bull nose plec, which we brought home, who we really liked , however, after a few days I noticed he was breathing heavily and had red patches under the skin, so I put him in my spare tank medicated but he died that night... I phoned the lfs they said if I brought a water sample in as long as my water was okay they would replace, water was fine, no ammonia, no nitrite, slight nitrate.

Soooo after questioning me about the state of my tank I looked in their tank and they were covered in white fluffy stuff and not looking good at all, he said that he wouldn't sell them and recommended I got a dwarf clown plec instead, in hindsight I should have said no and researched first, what I wanted was a fish that helped with keeping the tank clean and free of algae. He/She is living under a small piece of bogwood at the moment and doesn't seemed to have moved yet.

Would like some feedback on this fish:

I have read that some people say they do clean up algae, is this true?
Have read they are very messy is this true?
Have read they can be very agressive with coreys, not that I have any yet?

Look forward to hearing your views.

I had a CAE for years and he got huge, almost 10"

I now have a trio of flying fox's and they clean every last bit of algae off my plants but rarely touch the glass.

mine was the same

hed have a nobble on plant algae, but absolutely crap at eating algae on glass!

LFS's are always trying to move CAE's under different names.

I got mine at 1 inch, hes now sitting pretty around 7 and a half.

These guys can get big.
But they can also get aggressive if kept in smaller tanks as they grow.
And they WILL grow!

Ive kept mine with gouramies, angels, tetras, discus ect. (hes a tank fixture, i cant very well sell him!)

Ive been told "ooooh that's bad you have to get rid of him"
Cause he will eat the slime coat off your other fish
Eat your other fish
Kill everything
Eat your grandmum
Burn down your house
Laugh over your grave
Ect.

They have a bad rep and some of them deserve it but for the most part, lots of space and making it able for him to feed 24/7 and he shouldn't ever have a need to hassle anyone. I would not say they make great "new tank" pets. Mature tanks with lots of algae and bogwood. Mine loves to hide out, he dug a HUGE hole all the way to glass through almost 4 inches of substrate just to make his home!

Thank you for your replies, hahaha at wooden chairs.

my CAE didn't hide as much as this clown plec, and he is so well camouflaged on the bogwood, we play hide and seek to find him and he is sooooo messy, I hoovered all the sand up yesterday and you should see the state of it already, he is as bad as the kids!!!!! the sand might need to go or the fish!!!!!!!!

The lfs told me to get CAE as a good starter fish, they are so wrong to tell people that, at the time I had a 35litre tank, which seeing as how big he grew is silly. I upgraded my tank, but he kept picking on my male gourami, who turned out wasn't very well, so he obviously knew.
