Hi peeps, never really been into this section so hi :)

Right then, i was thinking to day about space and my tanks and really with a new baby on it's way could do with closing some tanks down and only having say 2, i am thinking on the lines of a nice big tank around the 6x2x2 size with somethink like an fx5 filter.

Now to the stocking, i have always wanted rays but never really had the time or room for a large enough tank, so if this actually happens (permitting the other half doesnt put a stop to it) could i have them and which kind could i have?

Also.. which tank m8's would be suitable, ive always liked Arowana's i know they would be compatible with rays becasue ive seen tanks with them together from people on this forum, but would the 6x2x2 tank be big enough for one?

This is not a complete garentee on me actually getting this tank yet, i have to sweet talk the other half but if i say im getting rid of 2-3 tanks to do this it may sway her lol.

Failing this and the fish i want arnt suitable i will probably go the green and blue phantom plec route but thought i would check first.

thanks for all the help in advance and look forward to some suggestions :)

tank is a bit small really, especially with the aro. even with the smaller rays it is a bit tight.

I would want a 7x 2.5w x2 really, then you can have most of the commoner rays and asian, black or silver aro.

probably would have 2 fx5's or a big sump, big messy fish with very little tolerance of pollution.

WOW that is 262 US gallons! That is one huge tank. Just the water alone will weight 2185.08 lbs or 991.13 Kg. That is some serious weight! Hope you have strong floors.. lol

well the tank im getting for rays and an aro is 6x3x2 and been assured it is sufficient. as far as i know the tank would have to be at least 30 inch wide to keep any of the smaller rays and at least 6 foot long.
i will be using 2 fluval fx5's and im sure this would be sufficient.
hope you manage to do it! its what i've been planning for a while!

Argh rite then i guess it's the phantoms tank then, i cant go bigger than 6x2x2 and if thats not suitable then i wouldnt even try and squeeze them in ;)... thanks for the info guys, much apprieciated :)

to whitester, i have concreate floors so weight really wasnt a problem ;) unfortunatley space is lol

thanks again all

as said rays really need much wider tanks 30"+ imo
you can still keep some other great oddballs in a 6x2x2

You could still go with an asian aro for the 6x2x2,
and then some nice Bichirs or cats for the bottom as a substitute for the rays

Cheers guys, the aro was more for the other half to sweeten the deal im not a particular lover of them myself, as to other oddballs, again not really fish im to much into.. i just wanted rays lol and if the tank is to small i will probably just stick to what i love and have plecs :)

Thanks anyways guys :)

you can get rays that will be ok in a 6x2x2 tank for some time its just they are harder to find than the average motoro

you need to look out for scobina hystrix maybe even reteculatus

scobina 12-14inch disk should be fine in a 6x2x2

just don't do what everyone else does and get motoro thinking they will be fine in that size tank

Thanks for the reply m8, however if a fish will only be OK and not perfect then tbh for the fishes best interest id rather wait till i have a perfectly suitable tank :).

What is perfect? Do any of us fish keepers give perfect? We may have perfect water and feed correctly, but is being confined to a tank of any size we can keep in a private home actually perfect? Could this our hobby be described as perfect?
I think too strong a word and "Suitable" would be the correct term. A 6x2x2 would be suitable for any of the 3 speices of rays T1 mentions above.

Why did you even comment like this?, what was the point and what do you think you was going to achieve?, i never asked for a run down on what you thought about how a tank isnt suitable for fish fullstop, i aksed weather a ray would be suitable for the particular size tank, answer the question instead of babling on or just simpley dont answer the question.

Perfect is better than ok simple, also suitable doesnt meet my standards of fish care.... you have it correct when you say "but is being confined to a tank of any size we can keep in a private home actually perfect?"..... no it's not but whats your point?... perfect to me would be the biggest i could get which would be PERFECT to keep for life..... maybe the tank would be suitable, yes but not in my eyes PERFECTLY suitable... if someone had come and said yes the tank is fine to keep rays in and they would be perfectly happy then fair enough.... but they didnt they said ok and would be suitable. If m8 you come on here just to basically try and make trouble then please just stay away.

Excuse me, chill out, take a pill... #### time of month or something.
I dont see how what I asked was making trouble, mearly asking what PERFECT is. Pointing out perfect is not acheveable in this hobby, harsh but true. So we do our best to give the best we can.
T1 is a very experianced ray keeper and breeder as am myself, and can both say and have in posts above that a 6x2x2 is "perfectly" fine for a smaller spieces ray as mentioned above.
Sorry if you had to get narced by my comments but thats your choice
