I just have to rant, hope I don't get this closed. But here goes.

About six weeks ago, my brother got a kitten (petshop owner found it, asked to give it to the animal shelter, they couldn't take it for another day, she got p*ssed and someone took them off their hands, gave one kitten to somebody and another to my sister-in-law (well my brother's fiancee) who decided to keep it. So that kitten is stuck with a rather annoying 5 year old (but then again I hate all children so...) who, likes to do terribly violent things to cats. Anyway the apartment manager let them keep it, yada yada. He's decided she's going to be indoor and not going to get shots, wtf? Is it even legal to not have rabies shots? He might even have been debating not having her spayed. Her litter box was a plastic cooking pot, she slept in the bathtub... and then he needed us to babysit her, when she was 6 - 7 weeks old. When he drops her off, "She has a sneezing problem. Bye!" So we're stuck with a cat that has a cold. And to say the least, we have FIVE FOSTER CATS! and the animal shelter will not be happy to pay for medicine for five sneezing cats. We take her to the vet (and my brother was thankfully grateful, he d*** better be, it would have costed him 50 - 75 dollars more because the vet gave us a discount because we volunteered at the shelter.) and got her medicine, locked her in my brothers room and no germs were exchanged. Thankfully, the cats were OK.

So now my nephew is diagnosed with ADD and asbergers and got pulled out of preschool into therapy. OK, brother decides he does not want the cat, "cannot handle the stress" (i have four kittens running around... all the time... stress? i'm sure.) and it "tears up everything" (um... it's a kitten.) So the animal shelter charges to take the pet off your hands, chances are he's going to sell it (yes sell it, I'm sure he'd just love to reap the money  ) to some random person who doesn't spay their animal. Honestly, really. I do feel sorry for this kitten, and the many, many babies she will soon produce. (i'll bet money when she gets adopted out within 5 months she'll be a mother of 3 and deathly ill)

i sympathise with your need to rant, i'd be fuming......wait, no, i AM fuming!! some people don't have their priorities straight...i understand that their child is going to need more care, and may not be compatible with a pet, but why can't they get the kitten desexed, vaccinated and then rehome it properly??? wouldn't be that hard, surely?

I agree but... therapy is expensive, the sister in law works at Starbucks. The sad thing is my brother has said he might break up with her but he feels sorry for her. people like that...

Is it your brothers kid? if it is and he want to break up with her thats messed up. Anyway I have the same problem with a friend of mine, she got a cat spent over 200.00 on toys and other kitty stuff and then doesn't spend the 50.00 to get her spayed. So far she has had 2 litters and she sells the kittens as soon as they stop being cute :( at least she get them vaccinated. But still I feel your pain, but what can you do?? There is only so many animals you can help

He's decided she's going to be indoor and not going to get shots, wtf? Is it even legal to not have rabies shots?
It's not in North Carolina. We just got a notice earlier this year that it was time for our cat to be vacinated again. Of course, if they don't know you have the cat, you wouldn't get the notice. The vets around here won't see an animal unless it has had it's shots. The same applies to groomers. I have to show proof of vaccintations before they will trim our dog at Petsmart.

I don't get the whole not-spaying thing. Have you ever heard a cat in heat? It is probably one of the most obnoxious things created in the Animal kingdom. It's really bad. An intact male is no picnic either, spraying, fighting, roaming, yuck!

Unfortunately, many of the licenses that apply to dogs, may or may not apply to cats. In IL, my Turkish angora needed a rabies license, just like my dog. In FL, she gets the shot, but the license isn't required, so technically, I'm not breaking any laws if I don't get it for her. You have to look it up in your particular state. I never owned a cat in WA, only dogs, so I wouldn't be able to answer the legality question.

I can, however, understand why some people choose not to vaccinate. I don't think it's a good idea, but I've been lax on a cat's vaccines before. Never on a kitten, though. Many of the adult "yearly" vaccines, however, are still effective after a year. When I moved, it was difficult to find a quality/affordable vet, so my Turk went without for like 20 months, but she still didn't need boosters, the yearly was sufficient. I don't vaccinate my cats for everything either, really since they are all indoor, just the airborn things and things that have a long life on shoes, clothes, and such.

I'll be honest, though, when faced with multiple cats, I cut corners . My kittens spent the first 8 weeks of their lives in a Roman bathtub in a spare bathroom, and for a time, a large plastic tray served as a temporary litter box. But, getting them good food was the highest priority, and that took most of my funds. In addition, I've got other pets, and I really didn't want them exposed to non-vaccinated kittens, so you should keep young pets isolated at first.

I can understand your rant. It must be frustrating to know people that just don't have the same thoughts on animal welfare that you do. I'm glad all your kittens are ok and didn't catch anything from the new one. Poor thing's had a lot of trauma in her short life. I hope things work well for her in the end.

this is how i kind of got my cat, some lady in an apartment building had a cat and it kept having litters so the lady would give the cats to a petstore in a neaby plaza. while shoppinf for dog food (i was turning four soon, had a big rotti that HATED cats and my dad didnt like them either) the store was giving the cats away, and since i was only 3 going on 4 and (i was so darn cute) my parents let me have one. a female little terror that was lots of trouble =) i love her. shes now 12 years old and an outdoor cat.. but since we already got a got that gets shots, we just brought her in at the same time.

but i bet the lady thats cat was givig birth didnt care really about her cat, she mightve but i doubt it. but im glad cuz thats how i got my lovely lala

good rant, it made me relect on every cat incdent i hav ever had, or heard about.

this one is distrubing:
my mom got her cat, because a friend of friends MOTHER had a cat that had kittens, and without even trying to see if anyone wanted one she was deciding to flush the new born kittens down the toilet.. the friend of my mother was telling her and my mom was so disturbed she went to the ladys house (this story isnt as heroic after) she took a kitten from the lady (because she was only about to go to collage and had NO MONEY to take care of a bunch of kittens). i dont kno how many kittens were left at the time though. but my mom took care of it.

i hate stupid people..

and then! (omg im starting to rant now too, chain reaction) my parents own a farm, and me and my friend came to play and sleep over a day. the neighbours had two cats, but one had decided it liked us better and the neighbours didnt care if we kept it. so we took care of her and got her shots and what not. then on the day me and my friend were playing, we went to climb this old barn and the cat (named bebe) followed us. we all went in the hayloft and bebe went to the back and layed down, then me and my friend noticed she was feeding three baby kittens. we got them all back to the house and took care of them

then we needed to give them away. which i was no part of, which made me mad. one was going to stay on the farm with its mother. one was going to a family that had like 7 kids (not even a farming family) poor thing.. and one i wanted to keep with my cat. she was upset when sh saw the cat, but if we gave her more time to adjust she would learn to love the kitten too!! but but parents didnt give it that chance.. they gave it to my cousin. my spoiled little cousin who wants EVERYTHING i think she has a zoo in her house and she doesnt even care anymore once she gets a new one. she now has my cat, a poodle (sorry if anyone likes him, i hate them) a bunch of birds, probably a fish. maybe more. i try not to go over.

so yea. but all the people above took care of the cats i guess.. but i still hate stupid people. like in the first story!

RAHHH!*turns green*

edit: i had to add another story because i just remembered, my brothers girlfriend works at a vet part time, where i might be working too soon, and she was telling me last night how to kittens came in, and they pulled out one huge larve thing from each one. one had one in its head (where it made a hole) and one up its nose.

i dont know who would let out (she said the age) one week out kittens, outside by themselves? something worse couldve happened , but i think a bug that eats your insides is pretty bad too.

No it's not my brother's kid. It's hers. They've been together about 18 months, shame he has to be so selfish. OMG she flushed them down the toilet? Wow, was that like years ago? 'Cause the laws for animals were much less strict then, my mom said once she had a male (intact) cat that sprayed and she put it in a bag and drowned it.. jeez... now she'll never even consider getting a boy cat!

yea that was like 30 years ago.

:| i couldnt forgive my mom if she did that to a cat.. drowning it cuz it sprayed.. but my mom wouldve just gotten in fixed. even tho i think the cats she has ever had were all female.

that's a rough situation to be in KJ... how much does it cost to surrender an animal where you are?
