Mum just broke the news to me we lost one of our goldfish in the pond. She saw two pecking at it on the slabs beside the pond this morning. I've always said I hated birds and now I hate them even more! :shout: They got chased away so their efforts were in vain.
I don't know which one it was as now all the fish are in hiding. :-(

How big is your pond? Is there a chance you can put a monofilament netting suspended over it. You may end up catching some birds in the netting but you hate them anyhow. ;)

If you don't do something, they will probably return. Is this the first time you've had a problem with birds going after your fish?

Several years ago, they were working on the drainage canals in my area which made the birds look elsewhere for food and a Heron found my backyard. I saw him standing in the backyard and it was cool at first. Then I saw him spear at one of my goldfish and got one. I ran out and the heron dropped the fish and flew off. I put him back in the pond and he recovered but I had to put up netting for the rest of that summer until the canals were back to normal and the wild birds had a regular place to eat. My netting never did catch or kill any birds but I didn't use monofilament so they could see it... but monofilament netting is a lot cheaper and easier to put up since it's so light. I used nylon netting with smaller holes so the birds would be detered without getting caught in the net but I had to put up decent sized poles to support it.

Absolutely no idea how big the pond is. A decent size though. Years ago a neighbour witnessed a cat run off with a goldfish and more recently when we were replacing our summer house in the back garden with a new one, we found the skeleton of a goldfish under there. It's anybodys guess what killed that one. I'm not even that near to the sea although an ex neighbour of mine used to chuck out bread on her front lawn and that encouraged the buggers to come (also resulted in lots of bird crap on our cars). I reckon something needs to be done like you say. I think this happened due to their not being much cover from the plants anymore. We gutted the pond last year. As much as I don't like birds and cats I'd never purposely hurt one.

Shall speak to dad about it. :(
