Rams in my tank

True, that should be 10G per fish, so 20 for a pair.

Dwarf Grouramis = Top / Middle of tank

Ram = Middle of tank

Just passing on my experience.

If you want to try it, go ahead, but I doubt it will work.

not doubting your experience at all but what size tank did you do it in? 60 gallons is pretty big... none of the 6 rams i have owned would i ever have considered inhabiting the middle of the tank...they are always 5" from the bottom or less except during feeding...

I have dwarf gouramis and rams, and have no problems at all. When I removed the floating hornwort, the male gourami stopped exhibiting breeding behaviour and stopped being agressive with everything (previously he was chasing everything).

Incidentally I'm not convinced I have a male and female ram pair (as in, I *think* I might have 2 males), and they get on fine with each other. I'm not a ram expert so I'll get a pic someday. One is definitely a male. The other doesn't show the usual signs (dorsal spine, red belly) of being a female, but they're not fighting... :dunno:

*edit* just to add, remember all fish are individuals and have different temperaments. So just because it works for me, don't assume it'll work for you. I may have the world's most laid back gourami.

Ok well, i really appreciate all the help everyone has given me (great replys!!!) I will be getting a pair of each, since i knwo the store will take them back, and i will watch them :) I am going to watch to see if anyone doesnt get along, i know cichlids can get aggressive during breeding, but i will watch them and make sure everything is ok, i will definitely be keeping 1 of each kind, if i can get a pair that works, so they arent lonely, then that will be cool too :) Thanks a lot everyone! You all have helped me so much! And the fish you labeled off as you have scrappy are the same fish i have :) so thanks everyone! ill tell you how it works out :)

It's in a heavily planted 50 and to be honest the Rams a re pretty active at all levels.

As I said though the Dwarf went after them wherever they were.

I suppose I could have just had a real nasty bugger of a gourami :dunno: , but I wouldn't attempt it again!

is there a difference between a Gold Ram and a German Blue Ram (searching online they are being called the same thing???!!!)

Yes there is a difference, but I think that the Gold Ram is just a colour morph of the Blue. From what I understand it's slightly more sensitive than the Blue, but in general, any info you read about Blues holds for Golds as well.

Yes i have 2 male dwarf gouramis (the pale blue & red zigzaggedy type), to be honest they are probably the most passive fish in the tank (my fighter didnt like them at first and kept flaring up at them but never attacked them) but everyones happy. Now that ive moved the redtailed shark its the larger dutch ram thats been the most aggresive (although its only chasing away honey gouramis on occasions at feeding time)

Managed to take a fantastic picture of my larger ram today (as im quite proud of him as hes produced great colour)

Aint he a beaut :)

To be honest looking at the picture although its a decent one (cos he managed to hover in one space for long enough to get focus through glass) he actually looks a lot better and more colourful under the light of the tank.

Heres another one which shows a little more of the flourescent blue on the side of his body... still looks better under the tank lights...

Two bits of advice when trying tot ake pictures of your tank (as i found out today when having a session with the digital cam)

1. Always put the lense right against the glass as it eliminates glare off the glass.
2. Dont try and get good picture right after feeding (theres always a grainy look to the pics as particles are still floating round the tank... best to wait for your filter to do its work after feeding... about an hour or so)

You can probably notice a small white glow on the second picture by the rams nose (this is the flash of the cam)... Had to use the flash as the rams sitting near the back of the tank in the picture... any pics i tried up close by the front came out a little blurry due to focusing probs...

your ram is gourgeous, thanks for the pics! I will be getting some, found some local store that has bolivian rams, dunno if i am going to buy off of them or if i am going to buy online, havent totalyl decided, but thanks for the info and pics! I will be getting some rams soon enough (car broke down BAD today, have to go get a new truck.... dont know if i will have the money to get new fish for a few weeks, atleast it lets my other fish get used to them :)

One more question.... rams and rainbow sharks, i knwot hey are pretty dosile for the "sharks" but would they fight. I have honestly never seen or heard much of rainbows being really aggressive, just rtbs, so anyone knwo about this (no i dont have a rinabow, but i want one too, but not if it will hurt my rams !!!!!)

The one in the picture is a Dutch Ram. When buying fish its always best in my opinion to buy from a shop where you can watch the fish for 5-10 mins to ensure they are in good health, swim properly and have been treated correctly by the lfs owner and the fish isnt hovering in a corner looking lonely and slightly stressed.

Ive never bought fish online, but its probably because where i live in the UK there are a good 5 or so really well kept and well stocked shops locally to me and i can normally get any fish i want.

With regards to rainbow sharks to be honest ive never kept them (due to having a soft spot for my Redtailed Black Shark).

Apparently though they are classed as "semi-aggressive" and can turn into the tank bully...

ok thansk for that info, the place with the blue ram they seem lonely in the corners, but i know they are evry well taken care of, they may be lonely because its two males in the tank an dno females :/ but the golden ram is at a store that... well some of the other stores are really bad with thier fish, so i dont knwo if i will even try a gold ram, and the bolivian is at a store that is very reliable. I am still questioning the rainbow shark.... any ideas?
