Hi got a few new fish yesterday as my ammonia has held steady at nil for 3 days
question is that when i got home from work tonite one of the 5 stripe barbs was dead (on the bottom of the tank)

All of the fish fine when i went to work this morning..

tested tank and ammonia is still nil

my question is should i return the fish to my LFS?.... what is the normal procedure ?

(bit upset as its my first loss ... all others still looking fine)

Well, probably better post numbers for ammonia, nitrite(NO2), pH, nitrate(NO3) for the members so they can question you. Perhaps it was just that one fish, but there are probably more questions they will need to ask...

API test kit (just bought) Been using another one upto now

Ammonia 0 (yellow)
nitrIte 0 (aqua blue)
NitrAte 10 (orange)

PH 7/7.5
do i need to keep some water for the LFS

I would get a sample of water and take it directly to the LFS. There is no excuse for selling a fish that can't survive 24 hours. In my mind it means the shop has no idea how long the fish will survive because they are not taking the care needed to make sure the fish are ready to sell before they sell them. If they arrive in a big bag on Wednesday and they sell them to you on Thursday, do they really know if they have received healthy fish?

fist time we have bought from this shop, but they recive fish on Tuesday and have big signs on them saying not for sale until Saturday. they do have a few "sick not for sale tanks" which i thought was a good thing.

The other 2 barbs are looking fine (but the dead one did yesterday morning)

I think they are young fish as they are only just over 1 cm long and belive they grow to 5 cm long..

I will sample some water for them, how much should i take ? (as it will be sunday before i can return now due to work)

**** Update ****

Actualy anoyed now......................
went back to LFS yesterday with water sample (that i had tested Ammonia was nil, nitrite 0.1 nitrate 10 .... using API kit)

they tested it and got ammonia 1.5 ,nitrite 0.1, nitrate 10, ph 6, kh nil ......................

so when i got home i tested my tank again (they bined the water they tested..... also not i dade changed 20% water)
I got Ammonia nil, Nitrite nil, nitrate 10, ph 6.5(with api kit) ..... i also tested the water with my other test kit and got
ammonia nil, nitrite nil and nitrate 10.....

do you think thay were try to blame me for the fish becoming dead !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also on a slightly better (well not realy better) note i noticed some fry in my tank ... then i watched as my zebra eat it, and then another ........
it ate about 5 ....

i think there is one or two still fireing around the tank.
