Hello, I'm wondering if I can fit ian Otto into my tank. My setup is in my sig. My tank is having an algea bloom, and the algea just sits there, so why not feed it to something. Maybe I can get 1 or 2? Do you think I can fit one in there?

Sorry, im talking about the 29 gallon. I know its fully stocked but would 1 oto hurt?

you would be fine with a trio. i say this becuase they prefer to be in groups. once the algea is gone you will have to give suplemental feedings. zucinni works, mine ate brine shrimp and algea wafers too.

Well, I went yesterday and bought the last one they had. It looks so lonely, so I was hoping to get mroe than one. Since you say 3 would fit, then I guess I'll get 2 more when they get them back in stock at my LFS.

A trio is minimum. Otos are a schooling fish.

Here is some info vital if you are going to keep otos;

Otos can only digest food if they have a certain bacteria in their stomach. Without this bacteria, the oto will starve, even if it has eaten lots of food, because it cannot digest properly.

These bacteria need food, and will starve and die if food is not available.

Lots of otos don't get fed during transportation, and even though they are alive, they don't have any bacteria in their digestive system and are doomed to die.

Healthy otos with good bacteria will look fat in the middle, like a buddha belly.

For this reason, don't get Otos from a new shipment, wait a couple weeks and pick out the healthy ones.

Also once you have otos, make sure you are feeding them with zucchini, cucumber, algae tabs and occasional protein supplements. Otos have been known to starve once all the algae in the tank is gone.

I'm not questioning this, but have you got a source to confirm about this "bacteria"?

a google search for otocinclus + digestive bacteria will yield quite a few results if you wish to research a little further

Yea, that otto trhat i bought has been there for weeks, so I know/hope he'll be ok. However, hes not that fat, but he'll get there with all the algea, and food I have for him.

Yea, I was wondering if I I should wait a while cuz I heard some otos are weak, and shipping just makes it worse. SO I guess I'll wait a week or 2 after shipping to pick 2 more out. Thanks guys.
