I purchased some live blood worms from my LFS, my new betta wont eat anything else and that is what they are feeding them, and they told me keep them in the refrigerator and rinse them off occasionally. -_- Can that really be all??? -_-

How much should I feed them these blood worms??
When do I know when to rinse them off??
Do i need to feed them??
Will the dead ones hurt my bettas??
Whats the easiest way to rinse them off??
Is there any other specail care the blood worms need???
I only have two bettas and this seems like alot of worms, is there some point that
I just need to through them out and get new ones, like do they go bad?? :dunno: :dunno:

I ask all this cause I dont want to give them bad stuff.

Anything else I should know about live food feedings??? :)

I had to ask cause I have searched and searched and I cant find anything on this.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. :D

i'm not hugely experienced but i have bought them a couple of times and they haven't lasted very long. They go bad and start to smell like death!
However they didn't look that lively when i bought them. I'd make sure they get plenty of oxygen though, don't cover them up.

I'm definitely not an expert though. :/

First off, it's doubtful you have live "bloodworms", what you probably have is live Tubifex worms or blackworms. What I do is make sure I get from a reputable LFS that only sells fresh worms (I had one place that most of their batch was dead and stinking and she says, "here, these in this corner appear to still be ok", I of course said no thank you and walked out never to go back again). When you get the worms home, rinse them with cold water until the water is nice and clear (I pour them into a brine shrimp net and let the water run over them), then I put them into a little plastic container with just enough water to barely cover them. The lid of the container has small holes and I store them in the fridge (they need to stay cold or they will begin to stink). Everyday I again rinse them in cold water. Doing this my worms stay alive and active for up to 2 weeks. If at any point they start to look less active, even after rinsing, I dump them and get a fresh supply.

Hi sweet_tinuviel :)

It's very important to give your worms a thorough cleaning when you bring them home and to give them another rinse every day.

To clean them, I use a 2 cup measuring cup that has a little spout to make pouring easier. Just add the worms and run cold tap water into them; they will separate and swirl around. Let them settle for a minute or so and pour the dirty water off. Repeat this procedure several times until the water runs out clear. Then pour all the water off, except for enough to just cover them and store them in a covered dish in the refrigerator.

Repeat this cleaning every day to keep them clean and refreshed. Usually after you give them a good cleaning, it will only take one rinse to keep them clean. Don't buy more than a few days supply at a time so that they will be at their best until they are used up.

You probably have either tubifex worms which are small and curl up or blackworms which are actually a dark red and are about an inch or so long. :D

oh thank you so much for all the insight you guys are great.

They gave me what they call a half portion, it was $0.65and I would say it is about 1/4 of a cup of worms there are tons in this cup.

They are long and sort of brownish with maybe a yellowish outer skin, I only notice it when they are crawling up the sides of the plastic cup they are in. I rubber banded plastic over the top and poked a few hole in the top for air, and I have rinsed them everyday so good thing I did that.

So what kind of worms are they and a are they good enough for my babies, and what other live food is good for them?  :D

I dont have filters so I hope this is ok feeding them the live food.

They are too funny though when one of the worms gets away and they try to get at it under the marbles, cause the marbles magnify the worms, so its like they think they are going to be attacked and then run cause the worm might eat them.
