Grindal worms

I use coconut coir . I got a ten pound block from Uncle Jim’s Worm Farm and I break off however much I need . If it’s too much I store it in gallon size zip lock bags .
I did your trick of replacing one third of the medium with new and stirred the whole thing up. It's like a new culture

I impulsively just bought a new starter culture 😭 I don't know why I do this to myself! Grindal worms are so gross! But my fish love them 🥹 so I guess I better go and get stuff prepared for their arrival 😩

I feed all my fish on grindal worms I use mainly multi-purpose compost and feed it on ready Brek i have more than 30 cultures I will never run out of it and always have it available

One thing I've done is put the cultures in a place that's a little easier for me to access. I just to keep them under a cabinet and take them out once a day to feed or to give to the fish. Now I check on them a few times a day. I just feed a little each time and if I see they ate all the food, I give them more. It's great for getting more worms and avoiding mold.
I feed mine a premium dry kitten food and flake fish food.

Funny story. When I started my very first cultures, I soaked an entire brick of coconut coir. And ended up with way way way more than I needed.

They really are a great live food. Very easy to maintain and forgiving of mistakes. And while they aren't aquatic, they last a long time in the water. So if the fish don't eat them immediately, they don't go bad right away.

I cut a piece of bread into 1/2 inch squares , no crust , and soak them with a spray bottle . Lay the pieces on top and the worms should eat them up in two or three days . Watch for mold and remove immediately if necessary . Some guys feed tropical fish flake food .

Thanks. What are the dimensions of the container you are using to house the worms and what is the yield?

A small plastic container about 9” x 12” and an inch deep . The yield depends on the maturity of the culture . I get one good feeding a day . I keep three cultures going at once and feed from different ones on alternating days .

I feed mine premium dry kitten food and flake fish food. You can also feed them oats.
Whatever you feed them, keep it in an airtight container or in the freezer. You don't want mites hitchhiking in on the food.

Do you make air holes and do the filter floss thing or do you not bother?

How do you get the worms off the coir to harvest them? Are they embedded throughout the coir?
